Your roof plays an important role in protecting your home from the elements, but over time, wear and tear can take its toll. That’s why roof replacement is essential for certain homes that need it. This blog explores five signs it might be time for a residential roof replacement.

How Roofing Gets Damaged

The two main ways roofs get damaged are through severe weather events and age. Storms often lead to roof replacements because of their destructive impact on homes.

On the other hand, natural wear and tear with age can lead to the need for a replacement, as roofing materials have definite lifespans, even with maintenance. That’s why addressing roofing damage as soon as possible is important for maintaining the integrity of your home.

5 Signs You Need Residential Roof Replacement

1. Failed Visual Inspection

If your roof displays signs of wear without the need for close inspection, such as sagging, dark streaks, discoloration, or the presence of moss and algae growth on shingles, it’s probably time to consider replacing it.

Noticeable structural or physical damage after a storm is a clear indication that an emergency roof replacement may be necessary.

2. Asphalt Granule Loss

If you notice asphalt granules building up in your gutters, it could mean there is a problem. While a small amount of granule loss is normal after installing new asphalt shingles, an excessive buildup of this substance in your gutter system suggests it may be time to consider roof replacement.

3. Additional Signs of Damage

If your shingles are displaying additional signs of damage, it’s important to take note. Granule loss isn’t the only type of damage to be aware of.

Asphalt shingles may also curl, crack, buckle, or even blow off completely, indicating a potential need to re-roof your entire home. Here are a few areas to inspect for damage:

  • Check the ground for visible damage such as a fallen tree or branches.
  • Inspect your attic for water leakage.
  • Check the inside of your home for water spots or stains.
  • Look at the roof’s surface for missing flashing.

4. Sunlight Leaks

If sunlight is streaming into your attic, it’s a clear indication of a problem. Visible beams of light passing through holes in your roof into the attic signal an urgent need for a roof replacement. Ignoring this issue could lead to winter leaks, water damage, and even more expensive repairs with longer timelines in the future.

5. Old Age

As your roof nears its 25th year, it’s worth considering its condition. While modern roofing materials are designed to last for decades with little upkeep, older homes often retain their original roofing. If your roof is nearing the 25-year milestone, it’s advisable to ask a roofing expert to assess whether it’s time for a replacement.

Learn More About Residential Roof Replacement Services with an Expert

Residential roof replacement may be the best option for you if you notice any of these signs in your home. A roofing expert can guide you toward the best decision for your home’s roof. Ask an expert for more information on residential roof replacement.
