While a lot of people believe that Feng Shui or aromatherapy helps them to achieve a reduced-stress environment in their bedroom, there are some scientifically-backed stress reducers that have been proven to work when it comes to making your bedroom have a relaxing effect.

Scientific Hacks for Stress-Free Bedroom Design

We lead busy lives, and everyday stress can affect our sleep, health, and family relations. If you want to make your bedroom a stress-free zone, you should consider using some proven and tested ways to find inner peace – from making your bed more comfortable to using white noise.

Read on about no-nonsense ways to find zen in your bedroom.

Buy Some Quality Bedding

You spend a third of your life sleeping, so why not make sure that you are sleeping on a quality mattress – especially if you have some chronic pain issues or experience discomfort from time to time.

A high-quality mattress will help you be more comfortable during the night, which will allow you to sleep better and longer.

However, before you make a purchase, you need to make sure the mattress you are about to buy is the right one. You can do that easily by looking up the mattress model in Google – for example, “leesa hybrid mattress review” – once you click “search,” you’ll see what people that already bought that mattress think about it.

If you just want that “new mattress feel,” consider buying a quality mattress protector to put on top of your current mattress. Doing so can reduce the effects of sweat, mites, bed bugs, and other contaminants that could negatively affect how well you sleep at night.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

The National Sleep Foundation recommends that while you sleep:

  • Your bedroom should be completely dark at all times. If you can’t achieve this using blinds or curtains, consider buying blackout curtains or even painting your bedroom’s walls a dark color.
  • Your bedroom should be quiet at all times. If you live in a noisy neighborhood or on a busy road, consider buying a white noise machine or installing a fan to create white noise.
  • Your room should be cooler than 72 degrees Fahrenheit at night. If you can’t adjust your thermostat, consider buying a fan or window AC unit to achieve the said temperature in your bedroom.

Traditional Feng Shui design advice suggests that your bed should sit in the west area of the room, but according to sleep experts, it’s much healthier to place your bed on an east-west axis (along with everything else in the room).

That way, you are more likely to fall asleep when the day is complete and ready for rest.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax. If you keep piles of clothes strewn about and you have items left on the floor, it’s likely that you aren’t giving yourself the chance to create a relaxing environment in your bedroom.

It’s easy to let your things pile up, but if you want a relaxing bed-chamber, you should spend find time tidying the room regularly. This will help you feel more at peace in the room.

Buy Some Candles and Essential Oils

The right candle can create a lovely mood in any room of the house. But if you want to create a romantic ambiance or just want to block out the rest of the world, try burning some candles in your bedroom.

It’s easy to find candles that smell like chocolate, flowers, or even fruit, so make sure to find one that fits your own personal taste.

If you don’t like candles, consider using essential oils to create a relaxing and natural smell in your bedroom. This can be done by placing a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a soft cotton cloth and placing it under your pillow or by using a diffuser in your room.

Use Lavender Essential Oil for Calming and Sleep

Research has shown that inhaling lavender essential oil can help to reduce anxiety levels and promote relaxation. If you are suffering from a stress-related disorder, consider using lavender oil to help you find a more relaxed state of mind.

People who have trouble sleeping can also use lavender oil to help them fall asleep.

Create a Sleep Ritual

If you want to fall asleep quickly every night and wake up feeling refreshed, create a bedtime routine that begins about an hour before you plan on going to sleep.

The routine should include things like taking a bath, putting on face masks, reading books, or drinking tea.

You can even do a yoga routine with some ritual burning of white sage smudge sticks to purify the atmosphere. Allow the calming scent of white sage smoke wands to relax and clear your mind and in turn, get a restful night’s sleep.

Doing this will help your body wind down when it’s time for bed – making it much easier for you to fall asleep quickly and easily each night.

Use White Noise to Create a Relaxing Environment

If you live in a noisy neighborhood or you just find it hard to fall asleep without some “white noise” in the background, consider using a white noise machine in your bedroom.

This will block out noises from your house or neighborhood while allowing you to create a relaxing atmosphere at the same time. You might even find that white noise is helpful for blocking out other, more annoying noises like snoring from your partner!

The Bottom Line

Everyone experiences stress – it’s a part of life and being human. The difference, however, can be seen in how each person deals with it.

Some go to the gym to work out the frustration, some take up new hobbies and fill their days with them, while others change their bedrooms and habits.

Although it might sound ridiculous, the truth is that changing your bedroom environment, as well as adding a bit of a routine to your evenings, helps achieve a more relaxed state of mind.

You don’t have to try all of the methods we have mentioned above, as probably not all of them will work for you. However, try to implement at least one, and if you feel like it isn’t for you, you can always try another one until you find out what works for you. Good luck!
