Everyone knows how crucial it is to have a good night’s sleep but it is really not easy to get one when something is bothering you physically or mentally.

With hectic schedules, work stress, and other mental conditions, many people struggle with sleeping disorders such as insomnia.

One of the prominent reasons for not having a good night’s sleep is the bed bugs.

These insects feed off human blood, and their bites often end up giving you nasty rashes, itchy bumps and disrupted sleep.

How Can I Avoid Bringing Bed Bugs into My Home?

In simple terms, bed bugs are considered public health pests. Although they are actually not responsible for transmitting any disease, they can still have a negative impact on your physical and mental health.

So, it is better to keep these bed bugs from infesting your home. These bed bugs can enter your home with second-hand furniture, luggage, or wooden boxes.

Read to learn more about how to avoid bringing bed bugs into your home.

Prepare a Ritual for Your Travels

Believe it or not, recently, around 80% of US hotels have been treated for bed bugs.

They are also found on cruise ships, airplanes, and other modes of public transportation.

So, if you often go on trips, there’s a good chance that you might come back with bed bugs.

According to The US Department of Health and Human Services, you need to take some precautions while traveling to avoid coming into contact with bed bugs.

You need to inspect your hotel room before sleeping in. Here are some additional hacks that you can try.

  • Try not to put your luggage on the hotel’s bed. Choose a place away from the wall.

Use a flashlight to check for any signs of bed bugs on the bed and other furniture pieces.

  • Check for yellowish, white, or black stains similar to marker dots.
  • Go through everything that’s near your bed, such as nightstands, for better safety.
  • Also, as soon as you return from your trip, make sure you put your traveling clothes away and wash them separately with hot water and antibacterial soap.

  • ALWAYS remember to vacuum your suitcases and empty the contents into sealed plastic bags. Throw the bag away into an outside garbage bin for better protection.
  • And your last step after returning from your trip would be to consider using bed bug exterminator treatments to steer clear of any possible infestation.

Try seeking help from professionals to deal with it in an effective and environmentally friendly way. This way, you’ll be leaving no loopholes for those nasty bugs.

Sanitize your Second-Hand Furniture

As outlined above, bringing used furniture, especially from a thrift store is one of the reasons for bed bug infestation.

Now there might be other things lingering on your newly bought furniture’s surface.

That’s exactly why you need to properly disinfect your furniture before you bring it into your home. Follow these steps to sanitize your second-hand furniture.

  • Take off the covers, wash them with hot soapy water using a washing machine, and dry them in the sun.
  • Before bringing in your furniture, leave it in the sun to kill any bacteria and get rid of bugs with the help of UV rays.
  • It would also be a smart move to replace all the covers and cushions altogether.

Final Words,

Undoubtedly, bed bugs are a nuisance. It is best to take precautions and avoid bringing them into your home by using the tips mentioned above. So, sleep tight and don’t let the bedbug bite.
