Seam Roof: Choose It, Metal Or Corrugated Board?

It would seem that in the 21st century, seam roofing has lost all popularity.

However, semi-handicraft sheets made of simple iron were replaced by modern metal rolls with decorative and protective coatings, and interest in the rebate has grown again. Maybe you should stop at the seam roof?

Seam Roof: Choose It, Metal Or Corrugated Board?

Structural Differences Between the Rebate and Profiled Sheet

Seam roofing, as well as assembled from corrugated board, consists of separate parts-panels (they are usually called “pictures”). However, the method of connecting elements is different:

In the case of a profiled sheet and a metal tile, seams are formed when the edges of adjacent sheets overlap each other.

Seam roof joints are “locked” with locks using special tools (roofing frames, etc.). The connection is strong, and durable, and forms an aesthetically pleasing pattern.

To work with seam roofs, you need to have special skills and tools. For inexperienced installers, a “click-fold” with a “self-locking” lock is suitable.

However, this material has limitations. The connections are not as reliable, so it is suitable for roofs with a slope of at least 16 degrees.

Another difference is that seam roof panels are not given a trapezoidal or wavy profile.

Longitudinal stiffeners on flat sheets are already formed during installation on the roof when the bends along the edges of the nearest elements are connected to one strong side.

Before you start making such a roof, you need to know the standing seam metal roof cost per square foot . This will help you determine the subsequent price, and understand which material is better to choose.

Benefits of A Seam Roof

Seam roofing is not without reason considered one of the most prestigious. It is time-consuming to install, but very reliable and looks interesting.

Seam Tightness

If the roof has been worked on by qualified roofers, this ensures that the seam locks form a reliable water barrier. The waterproofness of the seams is maintained for decades, it is slightly affected by temperature expansion, wind, and snow drift.

The advantage of a seam as a type of connection is that there are no visible fasteners on the roof surface. This means that it does without through holes for hardware, through which water can flow inside (when the seals are worn or improperly installed).

Fasteners for fixing seam panels to the crate – clamps. These brackets are closed from above with metal sheets of the next row and remain invisible. Self-tapping screws and rivets on the seam are rarely used when installing additional, additional elements.

Installation In Winter

Unlike work with “soft” types of roofing (for example, flexible tiles), the installation of seam “pictures” can be carried out at sub-zero temperatures.

The exception is titanium-zinc materials, however, ordinary steel rolled metal can be mounted on the roof in almost any weather. It is important to provide additional security measures (safety systems, insulated overalls).

Maintainability

Punched, corrosion-damaged elements are simply dismantled, and then new ones are installed in their place. With a bituminous roof, this is impossible – in it, under the influence of the sun, over time, the plates are fused into a monolithic “shield”.

Minimum Waste

Cutting to size takes place right on the roof, so there is practically no risk of making a mistake in measurements and spoiling the building material strip.

In addition, it is possible to calculate the economical arrangement of “pictures” on hipped, diamond-shaped, and other complex roofs. With metal tiles and corrugated boards, such construction inevitably turns into mountains of useless scraps.

For Any Wallet

Seam “pictures” and extensions for them are made both from inexpensive galvanized steel and from aluminum, copper, and titanium-zinc alloys.

To protect against corrosion, polymer coatings of various types and prices are attributed to the metal base: polyester, acrylic, polyvinyl chloride, and polyurethane.

Seam roofs do not require frequent maintenance. Smooth surfaces are easy to clean and wash. For safe movement on them, special structures are produced: steps, ladders, ladders.

Cons of Seam Roofing

Of course, first of all, the high cost rushes – both metal tiles and corrugated board are cheaper in terms of a square meter of roof. With a careful study of the issue, it is easy to find other shortcomings.

Demanding On The Quality of Installation Work

Uneven seams, incorrect positioning of sheets, damage to protective coatings – these mistakes of non-professional roofers are costly for building owners.

To ensure that the roof does not leak, does not rust, and looks good, you will have to invite a professional team to build it. And this is due to the considerable cost of paying for their services.

Temperature Deformations

Due to sudden changes from heat to cold, undulating swellings appear on the roof, weakening the joints and badly affecting the appearance of the structure.

To insure against this, it is enough to use special sliding fasteners during installation, which compensate for temperature changes in the metal.

“Noisy”

Sheet metal is characterized by a “drum effect”. Impacts of raindrops and hail, and storm wind create a strong noise, because of which it becomes uncomfortable to live and relax in the house.

In fairness, the problem of noise is inherent not only in seam roofing but also in metal tiles and corrugated boards.

You can protect yourself from inconvenience already at the design stage: the structure of the roofing pie is calculated so that the level of sound insulation is acceptable.

The Need for Refurbishment

The metal of the roof accumulates static electricity, which, in bad weather, like a magnet, attracts lightning. Therefore, it is desirable to ground the seam roofs and equip them with lightning rods.

It is also recommended to install snow retainers on the roof. Snow rolls off flat slopes easily, so without containment structures, the risk of snow falling unexpectedly is very high.
