Are you planning a complete home renovation? If so, one of the things you’ve got to consider is the flooring you’re going to place in each room.

However, ensuring you’re choosing the right type of flooring isn’t always easy and can be more of a headache than you initially wished it to be.

How to Select Flooring for Different Rooms: Tailoring Choices to Specific Needs

We’ve created a brief guide that will detail how you can go about selecting flooring for the different rooms you plan to renovate within your home.

Choosing Flooring for the Kitchen and High Traffic Areas

Several challenges come with selecting the flooring for the kitchen and other areas of a home that are high-traffic spaces.

When you use Allfloors, you will find that these areas need flooring that will withstand all the traffic it sees.

From the amount of dirt and debris tracked across the floor, some types of flooring will fit your aesthetic.

However, one problem is that the flooring that fits your aesthetic doesn’t always mean it’s going to withstand people walking on it.

When you choose flooring that isn’t meant for longevity, you have to pay more in the long run to repair the flooring.

One flooring type you should avoid in this area is wood because wood flooring is more prone to denting and being scuffed, especially if it’s not finished properly.

But, you need to keep in mind the traffic again is going to put the finish to the test and could lead to the degradation of the flooring.

If you want some options for these high-traffic areas, we recommend choosing between porcelain and vinyl.

Porcelain is a great option because it’s resistant to scratching and dents that could occur from things falling on the floor or people walking through the area.

It’s also a more low maintenance option that only requires to be mopped, swept, and in some cases vacuumed if you don’t want to sweep the area regularly.

Vinyl is another option mainly because it offers several designs that could help you achieve the wood look without having to install wood.

Much like porcelain, it is a low-maintenance option, and as long as it’s installed properly, it won’t cause any problems in these areas.

Bathroom and the Laundry

While the bathroom may be a high-traffic area depending on the number of times you go and the hours you’re home each day.

The laundry room could also be high-traffic, depending on how often you decide to put in a load of laundry.

However, in these areas, you’re prone to spilling cleaning products, laundry detergents, and liquids.

When you spill liquid on certain types of flooring, it can lead to damage and bubbling if it happens on a frequent basis.

We gave the suggestion of porcelain and vinyl for the kitchen. You should also consider it for the bathroom and laundry rooms.

It will be easier for you to clean up any spills that occur and keep the area clean than if there was carpet or wood in these areas.

Trust us, the last place you want carpet flooring is in your bathroom, where people occasionally miss the toilet.

You’ll want to make cleaning up yourself as easy as it possibly can be.

Living Areas of the Home

These are the living areas of the home where you’re going to spend the most time with your family and entertaining friends who come for a visit.

The issue with these rooms is that this is where you’ll spend time eating and where you might have pets that jump on the furniture and run through the room.

It’s also common that these areas are filled with loving children who think the walls and floors are their personal coloring pages.

For these floors, you might consider wood flooring because it looks the best, and you can choose planked wood with the finish you want.

Because this area will experience a lot of use, you’ll want something cost-effective, and planked wood is the best thing to choose.

However, you can also choose carpeting for this area of the home because some people don’t enjoy walking across flooring that is cold under your feet.

The only issue with choosing carpeting is that when things are spilled on it, you will have to act fast to clean it up, or it will leave a stain that becomes harder to clean up the longer it is left there to sit.

If you want to look into wood finishings first, the fantastic thing about this choice is that you will be able to choose from various designs and finishes.

When you’re choosing your finish, you need to ensure it fits within the overall renovation aesthetic you’re opting for.

Basement

Your basement is an area of your home that doesn’t receive a ton of use, but it can be prone to flooding depending on where you live and if a pipe breaks.

You should choose a type of flooring that won’t be damaged in the event that water fills the space, such as vinyl flooring.

Vinyl is waterproof and is best because some basements have persistent moisture and dampness that can damage the floors over time.

You can choose from a range of designs with vinyl because it’s a very versatile flooring choice. When you’re looking into flooring for the basement, consider the price.

Again, it’s not an area where you’re going to spend a lot of time; you don’t want to put a significant amount of time and money into installing a floor that you’re going to have to turn around and fix or replace in a couple of years.

How to Select Flooring For Your Home?

When you’re looking to select flooring for your home, there are several things you need to consider ahead of time.

You need to think about the area where you’re placing the flooring and how much traffic that area of the home will get.

When you understand these things, it will help you make the best final decision on the flooring to choose.
