Household pests can not only be a nuisance, but they also can put you at risk of contracting illnesses and diseases, as well as developing infections.

Being able to identify the signs of pests is the first step toward eradicating them.

Common House Pests That You Need to Be Aware Of

In this article, you will find out what some of the most common household pests are, as well as what attracts them, and what signs they leave behind.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs can make your home unbearable. If you begin to notice tiny bites spread over your body, then your home might have a bed bug infestation.

Learning about the life cycle of bed bugs can help you to treat and eliminate them.

If you do not want to do this yourself, then you can hire a pest extermination professional to do it for you.

Bed bug bites can become infected. They can also transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite that causes Chagas disease, one of the deadliest diseases in America.

Mice

House mice can be found in both apartments and houses. They nest in warm, quiet places, like in cavity walls and lofts.

Mice will frequently venture out into your home and will gnaw at your furniture, walls, and wiring.

If they can get into your cupboards, they will eat your food. They will typically leave behind droppings, which is the main way that they are identified.

They can spread diseases to both humans and animals. While they appear innocent and sweet, they are not something you want in your home.

Moths

Moths can be a big problem. The main type of moth to watch out for is the common clothes moth.

The clothes moth will lay eggs on your clothing. Their eggs will then hatch, and their larvae will eat your clothes, carpet, curtains, and upholstery.

If you begin to notice holes in your clothes, then it’s time to do some investigating.

Moths are attracted to natural clothes, like silk, cotton, and wool. They are notoriously difficult to get rid of once they have established a foothold in your home.  If you are having moth problems, we got an effective moth spray for clothes for you.

Rats

Brown rats are one of the most common household pests all over the world. Like mice, they can bring disease and illness.

Due to their size, they also tend to scare people a lot more. They are relatively easy to get rid of, however.

Rats are attracted to, like mice, warm places, and places where they can get easy access to food.

They are known for chewing on electrical cables, which can be a fire hazard in your home.

They will also leave droppings and smear marks around your home. Rats should be eliminated as soon as their presence is made apparent to you.

Wasps

Wasps, particularly yellowjacket wasps, can nest in your home and garden. They can enter through open windows or doors, most often during the summertime.

A single wasps nest can contain over 20,000 wasps. If you notice one area of your home has more wasps buzzing around than others, then you should begin treatment immediately.

Wasp stings can hurt a lot, and if you are allergic to them, they can be fatal.

Flies

Flies are common household pests. They carry a number of diseases, including bacteria capable of giving you food poisoning.

Thankfully, they are one of the easiest household pests to treat.

They are usually attracted to places where they can find food, and they will infest your house during the summertime if the windows and doors are left open.

You can kill flies with DIY products, chemicals, or professional pest control.

Ants

Everybody has had ants in their home at least once. They are usually very easy to spot and will go for food debris or sugary substances left out.

They will enter your home in the hundreds. Typically, they will build their nests in warm, dry soil underneath your door, steps, or patio.

If you can locate the nest, you can treat your ant infestation very quickly. If not, you might need to contact professional pest control.

Spiders

While venomous household spiders are rare, they do exist. Usually, spiders are good to have around your home.

They will eliminate other bugs for you. However, if you begin to notice a large number of spiders, or you notice large, potentially poisonous spiders, then you should treat your home immediately.

Poisonous spiders can be a danger to humans and pets. But again, they are usually harmless and beneficial.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most feared household pests. They move fast, are nearly impossible to kill, and converge on your home in large numbers.

They will usually live in your kitchen in its wall cavities. They typically come out when it is dark to feed on any food that is left in your kitchen.

They might also infest your cupboards and food storage areas. Cockroaches can carry harmful diseases, so you must treat them urgently.

Woodworm

Woodworm is an umbrella term for many different types of wood-boring beetles.

These beetles will lay eggs in cracks in your wood, be it furniture or flooring. As with clothes moths, it is the larvae of the beetle that eats the wood.

Treating woodworm can be very difficult and often requires fumigation.

They can spread out throughout your home and cause devastation to your wooden furniture and flooring, which can be very expensive.

Fleas

Fleas cannot live on humans, but they will bite you. They are very difficult to get rid of and can carry diseases and illnesses.

You do not necessarily need to have a pet to be bitten by fleas or to have a flea infestation.

If the previous owner of your home had a pet that had fleas, then an infestation can remain in their absence.

They will typically bite your legs and your arms.

They jump around, which makes them very hard to catch, and they have hard exoskeletons which makes them hard to kill. They’re usually best left to the professionals.

With this comprehensive guide, you now know all of the hallmarks of the most common household pests.

If you notice any of them, it is important that you begin treatment immediately so that the infestation does not get out of control.
