If you are searching for fire-resistant doors, whether that be for your home or your business, it is important to understand how fire doors work to make sure you make the right choice.

Not only are there specific fitting requirements for fire doors but there are also legal considerations if you are installing a door in a commercial property or business.

Fire safety is of paramount importance, no matter the type of building you are in, and choosing the proper door can save lives. When looking for a fire-rated door, how do you choose the right door for your home or business?

What is the Purpose of a Fire Door?

According to Maria from Doors Galore “Fire doors protect your home or business by preventing the spread of fire, using the door itself, along with special hardware and smoke seals, to create a barrier that stops fire and smoke from spreading.”

How Much Fire-Resistance is Offered by Fire Doors?

The level of fire protection given by a fire-rated door depends on its FD rating. FD ratings will state the length of time a door will resist the spread of fire, giving the fire department time to arrive and tame the fire.

FD ratings of 30 indicate a 30-minute fire resistant rate, FD60 means it will resist flames for up to 60 minutes FD90 and FD120 each respectively will resist flames for 90 and 120 minutes. The seals and hardware that make up these doors also affect the FD rating.

Is there a Difference Between a Fire Door for your Home and A Fire Door for your Business?

Yes. If you are running a commercial business, there are more regulations regarding the installation and placement of fire-rated doors. If you are installing a fire door on a domestic property, there are fewer requirements and less rigid rules, though they still must be followed.

Domestically, you are required to install a fire door:

  • In an entryway
  • An entrance to a garage (if it is connected to your home)
  • Doorways to escape routes that are in buildings with multiple (more than two) stories

Commercially, if you are installing fire doors:

  • There must be an appointed “responsible person” who must carry out the risk assessments for the property
  • All installs must meet code and regulation requirements for commercial buildings

How Do You Know Which Fire Door is Right for Your Property?

All fire doors must be certified with the proper fire leaf rating (FD rating of 30, 60, 90, etc.) and comply with BS 476 Part 22/BS EN 1634. For residential properties, finding a fire door installation company is the easiest way to get all your questions answered. They can direct you to the right suppliers and install your doors for you.

For commercial property, be sure to be in touch with a fire door specialist who can discuss with you the legal requirements in place for all commercial fire door requirements, including proper fire door fittings, fire door closers, and the different types of fire doors available.
