There’s unmatched satisfaction that comes from fixing your home, especially for DIY enthusiasts. DIY projects also save on costs. However, you should think twice before DIYing your roof replacement or repair project. Unless you are a professional roofer, you might not have the right knowledge and tools to get this job done.

Even if you are a DIY expert, roof replacement is more complicated than other home improvement projects. In a survey of 2000 homeowners , more than half found their DIY projects more challenging and time-consuming than they expected.

Continue reading if you’re wondering whether you should attempt a DIY roof replacement or hire professional roofing contractors.

Can You Replace or Repair Your Roof?

Roofing projects are quite complicated, so whether you want to DIY the replacement or not, you should first consult a Shoreline roofing company before working on the roof. Professional roofing companies offer free inspections and estimates to homeowners.

While you can replace and repair your roofs, you should have the proper knowledge, experience, tools, and time to complete the project.

Remember that roof replacement or repair involves inspecting the damaged roof, and removing and installing new shingles. You should consider the following factors to decide if your DIY is worthwhile:

Roofing Material

You should consider the roofing material in place before knocking down your roof for repair or replacement. While you can DIY lightweight roofing materials like wood shake and asphalt, heavier materials like slate and metal can prove challenging.

Roof Size and Orientation

The bigger your roof, the more materials and complex it is. You can’t handle the entire roof by yourself. You’ll also need more expertise to make sure all components of the roof align. Similarly, you should consider the slope of your roof.

Installing low-sloped or flat roofs is easier because of the almost flat angles. However, working on high-angled roofs is difficult, time-consuming, and dangerous. Roof replacement also becomes more complicated if your roof has various extras, like dormers, chimneys, and skylights.

 Warranty

Working with roofing contractors means your roof replacement project is covered by two limited warranties. One covers the employees of the roofing company in case of injuries, and the other from the shingle manufacturer.

DIYing roof replacement voids the manufacturer’s warranty. Manufacturers insist on the correct installation of their roofing products by professionals.

Liability and Insurance

Unfortunately, your home insurance won’t cover any damages that occur to the roof during DIY replacement. Your insurer will argue that the damages resulted from the negligent actions of an unprofessional roofer. This leaves you with no choice but to cover the repair costs out of pocket.

Endnote

Roof installation, replacement, and repair is easily one of the most difficult home improvement projects. Generally, roof replacement can prove daunting for most DIY enthusiasts.

However, you can work on small-scale roof repairs. While doing it yourself can save on costs, you risk voiding the roof’s warranty. Working on your roof also comes with safety risks.
