Gardens and outdoor spaces have traditionally been places of nature. The whole idea behind building a garden is to introduce some greenery into your everyday life.

Just how our tastes for interior and exterior style have evolved, so have our tastes for gardens.

7 Ideas to Make Your Garden Look More Modern

A modern garden can be both stylish and natural. You can have the greens, but also the comfort of top-tier materials.

If you’re looking to build a modern garden, we’ve prepared 7 ideas that might help you. Let’s get started!

Concrete

One of the easiest ways to make your garden look more modern is to introduce concrete surfaces. You can do printed concrete slabs or poured concrete.

The idea is to do more than just pave a footpath. Rather, you want to give your backyard some structure using concrete.

Make it work with the grass and plants, but do it in a way that is symbiotic.

A concrete footpath is a utilitarian construct.

A whole concrete area shows determination and dedication to a set outdoor theme.

Besides, concrete can be fun. You can mold planters out of the same concrete you use for your main elements, thus giving the entire backyard a sense of uniformity. Your options are endless.

Refined Materials

Modern interior design is all about the use of modern materials. If you take a deep dive into the style and aesthetics of modern interiors, you’ll find that minimalism is the one common denominator, so there’s very little aesthetic boost coming from the shape of modern furniture alone. Most of the glamour comes from the materials they’re made of.

You can utilize this to give your outdoor space a more refined look. For example, you could build an elevated wooden patio using visually engaging woods such as Tigerwood or various subspecies of redwood.

Similarly, adding a hint of chrome can give your outdoor area that modern look by itself. It all comes down to what’s available and where your tastes lie.

Use Advanced Lighting

Lighting is an essential part of indoor and outdoor decoration. Lights can completely transform any space.

Outdoor lighting systems come in a variety of shapes and forms. However, the lighting engineers from Stay Off The Roof, a landscape lighting design Scottsdale AZ company, argue that you can do much more than just install the typical garden torches or festoon lights.

Depending on how deep you’re willing to go into lighting, you can do a lot with mood LEDs, hidden lights, and generally diffused light sources that offer impressive results.

If you do everything right, your outdoor area can look completely different once the sun goes down.

Bonus points if you have a pool and decide to add some underwater lighting as well. Speaking of which…

Build a Pool or a Pond

Have you ever seen a garden with a built-in pool or a pond that looks bad? Unless we’re talking about abandoned mansions, such a thing is incredibly rare.

Building a pool is no small feat. Especially if you’re looking to build something that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Pools built for the sake of style are generally a smaller investment and will do you more good in terms of aesthetics.

However, there’s a sweet spot between building a full-on swimming pool and a small pond. Small pools can be quite relaxing even though all you can do in them is sit down.’

It’s like a deactivated jacuzzi that doesn’t bring all the complexities a jacuzzi brings.

Fountains

If pools and ponds are too much for your taste, a small fountain can usually do the same trick.

The cool thing about fountains is that they really bring a dose of serenity into space. The murmur of water has a profound effect on people, especially if you’re trying to relax.

Another awesome thing about fountains is that you can get one for cheap if you’re on a budget. Cast fountains are available.

All you need to do is have the plumbing ready, and you’re good to go. On the other hand, you can go a step further and build a custom fountain.

The pros of a custom job are the fact that you can incorporate other elements of your garden design into your fountain, or vice versa. Of course, a custom fountain is always going to be more expensive.

Modern Fences

The fence that goes around your garden has a massive impact on how your garden looks. A tall privacy fence does a good job at keeping the neighbors out of your business, but it won’t necessarily add to the aesthetics of your garden. For that, you’ll need to use advanced materials.

Modern fences generally incorporate already known materials that are used differently. There are awesome modern bamboo fences that will give you a hint of style.

Bonus points if you add stylish lighting to your fence. The same goes for panel fences made of artificial materials or even concrete.

Modern Furniture

Last but not least, use modern furniture. Your patio is the defining element of your garden. The type of furniture you use will set the vibe for the entire surrounding space.

If you want your garden to be modern, use modern furniture. Some people think that modern furniture has to be uncomfortable or impractical.

That’s not necessarily true. Modern furniture can be extremely practical and comfortable if you do your homework.

Look for something that matches the theme you’ve laid out — something that complements your backyard both in terms of concept and color.

Defining Modern

Modern can be a rather subjective word in the world of interior/exterior design. Modern can be posh and glamorous, or rustic.

Because of that, your first job is to find a theme that matches your style and taste.

Find something that clicks with you and build a whole theme around it. The tips we’ve shared above are just some of the things you can do to make your garden pop out and look fresh.

There is so much more you can incorporate to reach the aesthetic you’ve been dreaming about.
