Utilities are a must-have for a comfortable life. They are a necessity, but most times, they do not come cheap. An average family can spend up to $2,060 per year on home utility bills.

Energy bills are among the most common expenses, and any tip for saving on that cost is always welcome. Here are some ways to reduce the energy bills in your home:

9 Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bill in your Home

Use Fans

If you live in the corners of the world where summers are unbearably hot, consider using ceiling fans. Reach out for the fan before going for the thermostat. A ceiling fan can make a room significantly cooler at a fraction of the energy you would have used with a central air conditioner.

Install a Smart Bulb

Do not use bulbs that use a lot of wattages to light up your house. Switching to LED lighting will save you lots. LED bulbs to utilize more than fifty percent less energy, and the best thing is that they last longer than incandescent lighting.

Install Motion-Sensing Bulbs

If your household members constantly forget to switch off the light when they move between rooms, they could be causing energy wastage. An excellent solution for that would be to install motion-detecting lights.

The lights will turn on when they sense motion and automatically turn themselves off when no one is in the room.

Install a Dimmer

Dimmer lights have lower wattage and output hence saving energy. You can install dimmer switches to save on electricity. Ensure that you get bulbs that can operate with dimmer switches.

Use Natural Light

Why switch on the lights in the day when you already have nature’s free lighting. Using natural lighting helps you save energy. Daylight reduces the amount of artificial light you will need and hence saves on costs. Get experts to do window replacement so that you can let in more natural light to the house.

Take Shorter Showers

You will not only be saving water but also energy spent on heating the water. A lot of energy goes into heating your shower water, and reducing the amount of time you spend in the shower helps reduce your energy bills.

Optimize Your Laundry

Save energy by making a few changes to your laundry days. Reduce the number of loads and ensure that you run full loads. Consider using cold water in your laundry because a significant percentage of the electricity used to wash loads usually goes towards heating the water.

Hang dry your laundry to reduce the amount of energy spent on drying them in the dryer. Upgrading your laundry and getting newer appliances also helps. Older equipment is not as energy-efficient and could be spiking the energy bills.

Unplug Electronics When Not in Use

Putting electronics on standby saves electricity than leaving them on. However, why not do one better and save more energy by unplugging unused electronics.

Air-Dry the Dishes

Instead of using the heat dry cycle on your dishwasher, you could opt for air-drying the dishes. Open the dishwasher door a crack and let the utensils air dry.

Wrapping Up

The hacks above will have you saving a few extra coins that could have otherwise been going towards energy bills. It is also good for the environment.
