Install Enough Outdoor Lighting

Proper outdoor lighting can deter offenders from going near your residence because they are at risk of being seen or intercepted. Install lighting in areas thieves and robbers might use as a hiding place.

For added security consider adding motion sensors. Choose to install them anywhere people could pass by such as your patio, garden or entrances etc. However, don’t place them near the pavements or public walkways to avoid getting complaints from your neighbours, pedestrians, and motorists.

Choose Safer Windows

Not all window glass is made equal. To enhance your security be sure to choose the best options. Laminated windows are more robust and provide better protection from break-ins. Unlike traditional window glass, laminated windows are equipped with a layer of plastic or laminate film that strengthens the glass.

In case someone attempts to break-in, the glass won’t shatter easily.

The glass shards will remain suspended in between the interlayer, which can either be made from ethylene-vinyl acetate or polyvinyl butyral.

This will allow enough time to set off the alarm and catch the offender.

Take Your Door’s Security to New Heights

According to studies, 34 per cent of burglars choosing to enter a house via the front door. Because your front door is the most obvious entrance to your home, you must ensure that it’s fully secured at all times.

Here are the best ways you can upgrade your door’s security :

  • Check the quality of door frames. The door should be no less than 4.4 cm thick.
  • Reinforce your wooden door with metallic strips carefully fitted around the security lock and the frame.
  • If you’re using glass panels, be sure to use laminated glass to stall thieves from entering your house.
  • Install a door chain so you can easily check who is knocking without fully opening the door.
  • When you fit a lock to a new door, we recommend using premium durable screws opposed to the ones supplied by the lock or door manufacturers. This will make your door more sturdy and add an additional layer of security.

Install Burglar Alarms

According to research, homes with visible burglar arms are less prone to break-ins. If you install an alarm system, you should place them in a conspicuous position.

Sure, there’s an expense associated with installing a complete security and alarm system, but it worth the investment as it will provide long-lasting peace of mind knowing that your home is protected and your family is safe from harm.

Safeguard Your Patio and Garden

The garden and patio serve as an ideal hiding spot for many burglars. To minimise your chances of being burgled, you can do the following:

  • Add gravel outside all around the garden area. This will help you hear if ever someone tries to sneak inside your house.
  • Try defensive gardening by planting thorny shrubs on the perimeter of the property. Some of the shrubs you can use include Aralia, hawthorn, and rose.
  • Install durable fences around the garden to limit access from the outside. Ideally, the fences should measure at least two metres high.
  • Add padlocks to your shed and install a battery-powered security alarm system, especially if you store a lot of valuable equipment inside.
  • Avoid leaving newly purchased packages lying about in random places outside your house. This will only attract the attention of thieves.

Consider Using a CCTV System

CCTV systems are a must these days because they keep criminals at bay. These can also help you track or identify criminals who try or succeed in breaking into your property.

When you install a CCTV system, you must place a sign to notify your neighbours. You should also check out the additional rules set by the SCC or the Surveillance Camera Commissioner.

Employ a Professional Security Guard

Gone are the days when people simply hire security guards to look over their businesses. Due to the growing number of safety concerns in many parts of the UK, a lot of homeowners choose to hire close protection personnel.

With the protection of a professional home security guard, you can reduce your risk of falling victim to burglars, intruders and thieves. Professional guards can alter their route and create various routines that burglars won’t be able to predict.

Secure a Home Insurance Policy

When all else fails, reliable home insurance coverage can protect you from the costs involved with a burglary. Check the details of the coverage and compare the rates before you commit to an insurer.

Better Safe than Sorry

Although Britain’s police force are doing their best to keep the nation safe, statistics reveal that 95 per cent of robberies and burglaries across the UK remain unsolved.

For this reason, be sure to implement security best practices for your home and protect your family. Make the necessary updates to your home. Make your safety a top priority and enjoy living a well deserved peaceful life.
