Hard Water Is a Health Hazard

Many people look upon hard water as a major inconvenience, which it is but the most concerning aspect is that it is a health hazard.

Drinking hard water that contains a lot of minerals is bad for health according to the International Journal of Preventive Medicine. Especially, high content of magnesium and calcium in hard water can cause several problems to your health.

  • Regular use of hard water increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Several studies have shown the link between high blood pressure and heart disease to hard water consumption.
  • Those who drink hard water are prone to a certain type of cancer, and there is a correlation between growth retardation in children and hard water. The risks of ovarian, colon, esophageal and gastric cancer aggravates due to hard water.
  • Hard water has links to neural diseases and diabetes too.

Skin Problems

Skin irritation is the most visible sign of skin problems that happen from hard water. Bathing with hard water results in dry skin and even bumpy patches on skin happen due to the effects of hard water.

The minerals in hard water prevent the chemicals in cleaning products from dissolving in water which leads to skin irritation and causes itching and rashes. The problem aggravates if you do not rinse well after having a shower.

Clogged Pipes

Several minerals in hard water are too heavy and sit inside the pipelines while accumulating debris and sludge and finally clogging it. When water flow to household equipment and appliances is insufficient due to clogging, and there is scaling, it affects the performance of appliances that take a longer time for heating.

Scaling can damage the appliances and clogging of pipelines can damage pipelines too. Hard water leaves unsightly marks in homes as it stains sinks, bathtubs, and showers and leaves a thick scale on water fixtures.

Water softeners use an ion-exchange process for eliminating magnesium and calcium from hard water and to make it soft and healthy. Not only the equipment and appliances look shiny when using soft water, but your health also glows along with it.
