Whether you’re going to the next town over or an entirely new place, the most cost-efficient way to do it is to pack your own things and move them on your own through durable storage containers or moving services.

DIY moving helps you when dealing with a fixed budget to make the big move in an economical way. Here are some clever tips to make your move a lot easier and less stressful.

Plan Early

Go through your things at least six weeks before the date of your move. Items that you don’t frequently use, including Christmas decorations and clothes that are out of season, can be packed first.

You can schedule pick-ups or drop-offs at charitable organizations. Share things you don’t want to bring with you on social media with sufficient time that you don’t panic.

Save household items before you travel and pack stuff you’ll need in an accessible plastic container right away.

Always Be Organized

When you pack, mark boxes with your name, the space in which they belong, and its contents. Every box at the new home can be transferred to the proper room, which will aid in the unpacking process.

The use of colored packing tape can be an effective way to keep track of which boxes go in which rooms.

Colors or marks can be used to let movers know whether a package is heavy or fragile. Count your bags and keep track of all your things.

If you are missing important things when you get to your new home, you’ll know that it has been misplaced during the move and you’ll be able to find it easily.

Make Use of What You Already Have

Before buying boxes, check for duffel bags, suitcases, and large storage containers like laundry baskets. You might have all of these in your house.

Dresses may be placed in the drawers of the dresser. Use plastic wrap on clothes to keep them in place.

Heavy-duty garbage bags can be used for packing clothes that can be hung. Tie the hangers using a string, and put clothes in the bag.

Pack Carefully

Replace the lids of liquids and gels in your kitchen, bathroom or bedroom. Seal the openings with plastic wrap before removing the lids. This will keep them from slipping or falling out while driving even if these lids become loose.

If you have makeup, put a cotton ball inside the container, to keep the powder safe and intact. Place heavy objects such as books at the bottom of smaller boxes to keep the box full.

On the other hand, put lighter objects such as pillows in larger bags or boxes. It is better to place lighter objects on top for rapid moving.

Always Protect Fragile Items

If you have breakable items in the bags, they need to be secured. Instead of utilizing packing peanuts, try to wrap breakable items in a fabric that you already have such as beddings, sheets, and blankets.

Safeguard stemware and glasses with clean socks. Bubble wrap is a great solution if you don’t have much packing material, but the newspaper is also just as efficient.

It is also cheaper and it is recyclable once you’re in your new house. Plates can be stacked on top of each other separated by kitchen towels for extra cushioning.

Be Careful When Moving Electronics and Furniture

Among the heaviest things to move is furniture. According to these Los Angeles movers, taking it apart —if possible — before moving will make it easier.

Protect your large electronics by wrapping them in blankets, and organize all cables, cords, and hardware with proper labeling inside individual plastic bags. This can also be done by taping the hardware onto a piece of paper.

If you’re leasing your new home, make sure to take pictures before moving in. Cleaning up your new home before your actual move date will mean that once the boxes are there, you can put everything away.

Moreover, it is also best to seek professional help from moving services in case you need to move out fragile and valuable items such as furniture to avoid damaging them.
