Rugs are the unsung heroes of our lives. They can define spaces, anchor zones, and direct foot traffic across the room. They can create feelings and add warmth and coziness to the interior design, introduce texture and add color.

When you purchase floor rugs online, you can choose from a plethora of styles without leaving the comfort of your home and have the rug delivered right to your door. Choosing a rug can be a daunting task, but once you are done with it, you will love each second spent in the room where that rug is placed.

From elegant houndstooth rugs to chick retro rugs, even Persian or modern rugs, all come in different sizes and shapes, and each one of them can find its place on this Earth. We’ve listed a few common things you should consider when choosing your rug so you can choose the best one that will fit your room’s settings and your preferences a.

Keep The Size Proportional

It’s important to pay extra attention to the rug size in your room. Make sure it’s proportional to the rest of the room, meaning it’s not too big so it overcovers the free space or too small so the room feels empty. The rug in the living room needs to be large enough so that the front legs of the sofa are on top of it.

Or, at least the coffee table to sit fully on it. Anything in between may result in irregularities in the design and might feel like the space is boxed in.

Choosing a rug for your dining room can be challenging at times. Choose one that will be long enough so all four legs of the dining table are on top of it. Do not settle for anything less than that.

The Rug Shape is Life-Changing

You don’t have to be an expert in interior design to know when a rug does not fit the room’s settings. Depending on your preferences and room features, your rug can be of different shapes, most commonly rectangular rugs are used across rooms. Since they come in so many sizes, there are no limitations on where to place the rug.

There are different types of rectangular rugs, narrow and expanded rugs. The narrow types work best in stairwells, hallways, and other narrow spaces. While, the round rugs can be used in smaller areas like the bedroom, part of the living room, or a square-oriented area in your house. Contrasts match, so you can match the layout of the room with the rug.

Consider The Function of The Rug

You might think that a rug has only a decorative function and it’s there to make the room more beautiful and visually pleasing. However, the rugs have their function, starting from the owner’s lifestyle, up to the softness and coziness under your feet every time you step onto the rug.

Is your priority incorporating comfort or glamour? A good rule of thumb when going rug shopping is to find the one that will accommodate the seating area and not the entire room.

Will the rug be just a piece of art put onto the floor? Or do you want it to be complemented by the rest of the features and furnishings in the room?

Bringing More Texture

When considering the rug texture, also have in mind the foot traffic in the room. If it is a room that is heavily used, like the living room, or more specifically, if pets reside there as well, you should go with a sisal or all-wool rug.

For more traditional types of rooms, you can go with antique or silk rugs that are a definite budget-buster and give a sense of luxury and higher style.

And then, there is the more affordable option of choosing a hand-knotted and all-wool rug that piles in interesting patterns and a combination of whole-point vibes and schemes. You can easily add dimension and interesting hues with the proper texture.

Opt for Durability Instead of Patterns

Patterns are important, don’t get me wrong! However, if you tend to choose between a more durable rug and one that has more beautiful patterns, always go with the one with higher durability. You can easily adjust the room’s features to complement the rug design and style, with the biggest advantage being not having to change it the next year again.

The pile height refers to the density and the length of fibers from which the rug is made. Rugs with shorter piles are longer-lasting compared to those with deeper piles. They are also easier to clean and vacuum since are usually made of wool or cotton and are extremely durable.

Deeper piles feel softer and thicker when pressed upon. Continuous foot traffic will not only damage the rug but will also result in losing pile density.
