While there is a lot that can go wrong with an HVAC system, many of these issues are avoidable! There are several common mistakes people make with their AC, and this leads to needless air conditioning service calls. Here’s what you should watch out for.

The Most Common AC System Mistakes

1. Not Cleaning/Replacing the Filter Regularly

One of the most important parts of your AC system is also user-serviceable: the air filter. That filter prevents dirt, pollen, and other contaminants from running through your air conditioning, but it will become dirty and clogged over time. Once it becomes too clogged, it will inhibit airflow.

This reduces the effectiveness of your AC system, as well as driving your energy costs up. It can also put extra strain on your HVAC, leading to breakdowns.

You should learn where the air filter is on your AC, heater, or heat pump, and make sure to check it around once a month. Never let it become completely clogged, and your AC system will run a lot better.

2. Allowing the Outdoor Unit to Become Clogged

Along the same lines, it’s vital that your AC’s outdoor unit(s) have clear airflow. They need that air exchange so they can release heat outside, without that heat building up. Their vents can be clogged up by debris (such as falling leaves in autumn) or by nearby plants growing onto them.

Trim back any nearby plants and be sure to clean it off a few times a year so the vents don’t get clogged. Otherwise, it’ll also reduce airflow and put needless strain on your system.

3. Never Getting Professional Tune-Ups

Your AC system is designed to run for years, but it still needs regular maintenance. It’s highly recommended that you call in air-conditioning service professionals once a year to clean your AC and give it a checkup. They can do any minor maintenance necessary to keep it running smoothly and avoid bigger problems down the line.

Be aware: Most AC system warranties require regular maintenance to remain valid. If you never call for a checkup and your HVAC dies as a result, you might not be covered.

4. Running the AC all Day

You should always shut down your AC if you’re leaving the house for more than an hour or so. Otherwise, you’ll just be wasting money, while putting extra strain on the HVAC system.

If you’re concerned about the house being too hot when you get home, consider investing in a “smart” Internet-connected thermostat. Then you can activate the AC a few minutes before you get home and still walk into a cool house.

Remember, your AC system needs care and attention. Regular maintenance and the occasional checkup can prevent unnecessary AC unit repair costs!
