A healthy-looking yard and garden bring life to a home. It’s not only welcoming but also one of the key features buyers look for when looking for a home. Unfortunately, tending the garden may not be a task many homeowners prioritize considering the busy schedules.

If you find the idea of tending a garden or a yard tiresome and time-consuming, the best approach is to engage professionals. A garden store in Portland OR has all the expertise and accessories that you need to revive your garden.

If you decide to do it yourself, below are practical tips that will revive your yard and prevent it from looking weary.

Clean Up

A clean yard and garden look much better than when left with overgrown weeds, fallen leaves, overgrown branches, and faded-out old leaves. Trim your plants for a facelift. Ensure you remove all the overgrown plants, overgrown branches, excess leaves, and thin branches.

Clear all the fallen leaves and flowers from the ground to give your garden a fresh and neat look. Clean out the rubbish that may have accumulated over time.

Ensure the edges are neat as this gives a manicured look. Part of cleanup may include power washing walls and pavements to give that overall fresh look.

Water Your plants

One of the main reasons your garden looks weary is that your plants may not be getting enough water. Ensure you give the plants adequate water and this should be done frequently. If you can’t do it physically, you can install a sprinkler for a few hours for several days a week.

Underwatering and overwatering plants may equally be destructive. When you overwater plants, the roots start rotting and this kills your plants. Underwatering makes the plants look weary as most plant processes cannot take place without adequate water.

Nourish Your Plants

It’s one thing to water plants, and it’s another thing to ensure they are well-nourished with all the nutrients required for normal functioning. You can use manure which is a more natural source of nutrients. If it’s not readily available, use soluble fertilizers.

You can apply twice per week to get vibrant-looking plants. Always consult with a botanist before introducing fertilizers to your plants as you may end up losing them due to fertilizer burns. Furthermore, consulting will help you know the different types of fertilizers.

Some are used for top dressing, some help your plants flower, and if you have fruit trees, some help in the fruit production process.

Some fertilizers need to be mixed with water because applying them directly to plants may burn them and eventually, you will end up losing your precious plants.

Pruning

Pruning improves the overall look of a plant. Start by removing the unwanted leaves, suckers, sprouts, and end by shaping your plants to their desired look.

By pruning your plants, you will reduce the number of unwanted leaves on a plant, making it look thinner and more appealing. Do not prune when it’s too hot, as this exposes the plants to sunburn.

Mulching

Adding a layer of mulch to your plants could be the lifeline they need to stay vibrant throughout. It helps preserve moisture, chokes weeds, and also insulates the soil from heat. Since mulch eventually rots, it’s also a great source of compost, thus providing nutrients for your plants.

Plant Drought Resistant Plants

Mix different plants to ensure there are those still standing even in hot summer. Perennials such as black-eyed Susan and the snake plant require minimal watering and will still bloom during the drought seasons. Such a combination ensures your garden looks green and fresh even during hot seasons.

Contact A Professional Landscaper

Sometimes, tending a garden with all the above suggestions may look like too much work for you. Depending on the size of your garden, this may not be far from the truth.

If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work needed to revive your garden, engage the services of a professional landscaper. They will ensure your yard and garden are well organized and taken care of at all times. The best part is you can engage them occasionally for a fresh touch-up.
