Buying a New Air Conditioner – Everything You Need to Know

But when it’s time to buy a new air conditioner, the process can be daunting. There are so many different types and models on the market that it’s hard to know where to start. Below, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about buying a new air conditioner.

Know the BTU

The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a measurement unit that rates an air conditioner’s cooling capacity. The higher the BTUs, the larger the room or space the air conditioner can cool.

When shopping for a new air conditioner, check the BTUs to ensure it’s the right size for your needs. You should go for an air conditioner with a higher BTU if you live in a hot climate, have a large space to cool, or have many people in your home. Likewise, if you live in a cooler climate or have a smaller space, you can opt for an air conditioner with a lower BTU.

Understand SEER

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a rating that measures the efficiency of an air conditioner. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the air conditioner.

When shopping for a new air conditioner, look for one with a SEER of at least 14.5. Not only will a more efficient air conditioner save you money on your energy bills, but it will also help to reduce your carbon footprint.

The SEER rating is especially important if you live in a hot climate. In a hot climate, an air conditioner has to work harder to maintain a cool temperature, which can lead to higher energy bills. A more efficient air conditioner will help to offset some of those costs.

Know the Installation Costs

Before buying a new air conditioner, be sure to factor in the installation costs. Installation can be expensive, so getting a few quotes from different contractors is important. Be sure to ask about any hidden costs, such as permits or fees for disposing of the old air conditioner.

Depending on the size and type of air conditioner you purchase, the installation costs can range from $500 to $2000. For example, split air conditioner installation costs will be on the higher end, while a window air conditioner can be installed for as little as $100.

Know the Tonnage

A tonnage is a measurement unit that rates the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. One ton is equivalent to 12,000 BTUs. The tonnage of an air conditioner is important to know because it will affect the size, price, and energy efficiency of the unit. When shopping for a new air conditioner, be sure to ask about the tonnage.

Consider the Type of Air Conditioner

There are two main types of air conditioners on the market: central air conditioners and window air conditioners. Central air conditioners are more expensive but more efficient and can cool your entire home. Window air conditioners are less expensive but less efficient and can only cool one room or space.

Consider your needs and budget when deciding on the type of air conditioner to buy. A central air conditioner is the better option if you have a large home or a hot climate. But a window air conditioner may be sufficient if you have a small space or a cooler climate.

Decide on the Features

When shopping for a new air conditioner, you will be faced with a wide range of features to choose from. Some air conditioners come with remote controls, timers, and energy-saving features. Others come with different modes, such as a fan-only mode or a dehumidify mode.

The features you choose should be based on your needs and budget. If you want to save money, look for an air conditioner with energy-saving features. If you want more control over your air conditioner, look for one with a remote control or timer.

Buying a new air conditioner is a big decision. But if you research and understand your needs, you can find the perfect air conditioner for your home. Just be sure to factor in the installation costs and know your space’s size. With a little planning, you can enjoy cool, comfortable air all summer.
