Although you will find that the excavation in the discussion here is somewhat similar to that of the archaeologists.
The encyclopedia Britannica views excavation from the perspective of purpose— as planned, rescue, or accidental.
Archaeological excavations, construction excavations amongst others fall under the umbrella of planned excavation.

Types of Construction Excavation
Excavation helps prepare the land for the construction of any form of structure.
It involves the removal of soil, particles, rock, and other materials to form a cavity to allow for the construction of the structure.
The following are a few out of the many types of excavation that exists;
Rock Excavation
This is defined as the excavation of all hard materials that require blasting. It is used to destroy impacted particles that pose challenges to the construction.
Rock excavation cannot be done with equipment used for the common types of excavation (topsoil excavation) and it requires special skills in blasting the hard surfaces.

Topsoil Excavation
just like the name implies, this is all about the removal of the topmost area of the earth. It is quite easy compared to rock excavation.
The range is usually less than 300mm. And the excavation basically removes vegetation or decaying matter which could make the soil unsuitable for bearing the structure to be constructed.
Muck Excavation
Muck is found at the bottom of a marsh. It is a combination of soil with high water content, and because of the loose consistency, it does not offer the stability needed to erect a foundation hence it is evacuated.
Evacuation in this sense could involve either being moved to another area or spread out to dry.
Cut and Fill Excavation
this is a special excavation done not because the soil is unsuitable but because of reasons like; to cut and strip away material if it is needed for embankments or to raise the elevation in certain spots or merely grading the land. It is also called stripping excavation.
Trench Excavation
Trench Excavation is a type of excavation where the length is greater than the depth. It is used to install sewer systems, pipelines, or lay foundations.
Earth Excavation
Earth excavation is all about the removal of layers below the topsoil for the purpose of construction.
Dredging
The process of dredging simply involves excavating and removing sediments and debris from underwater to allow boats and ships to pass easily and for other construction purposes.
Other types of excavation are road, bridge, basement, over-excavation, and many others.
