The granules serve as a protective layer but can be blown off by heavy storms or extreme weather conditions.

In this post, you will get to learn all about asphalt roofing granules. You can also check these best roofers in waltham ma.

What are Asphalt Roofing Granules?

Asphalt roofing granules are the most visible part of asphalt shingles. They are a mixture of finely crushed minerals such as slate, ceramic, stone, quartz, schist, or vitrified brick and fiberglass mat which is used in coating the shingles.

The granules are processed into different colors through ceramic firing which gives them a vibrant and long-lasting hue.

That’s not the only thing here, asphalt shingles granules do come with specific features such as impact damage resistance, algae prevention, and reflective properties that make the roof energy efficient.

What is the Work of The Granules?

The surface granules mainly work as protective layers for the roofing material as it keeps out ultraviolet light from the sun from permeating the asphalt core.

Also, the mineral surface helps make the shingles weather resistant. The granules give the shingles their waterproofing ability which allows rainwater to shed smoothly off the roof.

Asphalt shingle granules, especially the light-colored ones, are found to reflect sunlight which makes the roof to be energy efficient and will make your home cool all year round. Also, asphalt shingles are designed to be resistant to fire.

What Causes Granules to Erode?

Whenever you notice the granules of your shingles eroding or being washed into the gutters, that is an indication that the shingles are nearing the end of their life span.

Also, since granules are meant as a protective layer when they suffer enough weathering from weather conditions, the strength tends to deplete.

Rainstorms, hail storms, debris, overhanging tree branches brushing against the shingles, algae, and mold buildup can cause severe damages to the granules.

When this happens, the asphalt shingles lose their weather resistance and protective strength. This will make the roofing system more susceptible to damages such as leaks, rot, and infestation.

To identify granules lost, check your gutters and downspouts or you when you notice the ground are scattered with shiny materials.

Also, you may climb up your roof to check for balding patches or different tones of color that in some parts are fading

When Should You Be Concerned About Your Granules?

A small number of granules littering around the call for no sign of panic but whenever you notice a large number of granules in your gutters or around your home, you should be proactive and request the assistance of a professional to detect and fix the problem.

This may either be partial or full replacement of the asphalt shingles roofing system.
