Are you looking to replace your roof soon and want to know just how long it might take? You’ve come to the right place. While you can easily get a time estimate from your roofing company, several other factors affect how long it will take them to replace your roof.

TPO Pros Roofing & Restoration roofers give around 2 to 3 days to replace the roof of an average home, but the factors below determine how long it will really take.

When Do You Need a Roof Replacement?

If you have a perfectly good roof on your house, but the roof’s support has become severely weakened or damaged, it may be time to replace it. Generally, a standard roof can serve your home for about 15 years. So, if your roof is 50 years old and you have been experiencing problems with it, it may be time for a roof replacement.

When replacing your roof, it is best to have a professional inspect it to know just how much damage you are dealing with. Some roof repairs may require the entire roof to be replaced. Some repairs may require only part of the roof. Also, you may feel the need to switch to a new roofing material altogether, especially if the old one did not meet your needs.

Factors Determining Roof Replacement Time

  • Roofing Materials and Design

Roofing shingles are made from different materials, and each material requires a specific installation method and time frame. For instance, asphalt shingles may take between one and three days to replace, wooden shingles can take between 6 and 8 days, slate tiles take 6 to 7 days, and concrete tiles can take between a week to 9 days.

The design you want the roofers to lay your shingles on also affects how long roof replacement will take. Intricate designs are bound to take longer than the traditional horizontal approach.

  • House Size

Larger properties such as estates take longer to have their roofs replaced compared to smaller homes like a one-room cabin. Most roofing companies use the house size (in square feet) to also determine the cost of your roof replacement project.

  • Weather

Are you looking to replace your roof in winter? Your roofers may have to take additional measures due to the cold weather, resulting in more time on the project. However, we recommend putting off any roofing projects until when it’s not snowing or raining and cutting down on replacement time.

Also, cold weather may negatively affect how your asphalt shingles stick or seal. Icy or wet roofs also pose a safety hazard for anyone working on them.

  • Structural Damage

If you are just replacing your shingles, your roof replacement project can be completed in a few days. However, structural damage can significantly add to the replacement duration.

For instance, if the roof deck or other areas under the shingles need repair, your roofers will have to handle them first for an optimal roof replacement, translating to a slightly longer roof replacement time.

  • Roof Accessibility

Is your roof easily accessible, or will your roofers have to jump through a few hoops? If your home has a lot of landscaping or shrubbery that makes it difficult to access your roof, your roofers may have to spend more time finding an ideal way to get up there.

The same applies to dense residential areas where houses are too close together and compounds that lack close parking and paved drives.

  • Roof Steepness

Roofs that are too steep to navigate comfortably take longer to replace. That’s because the roofers will have to install safety equipment to facilitate your roof replacement project. Also, roofs with shallow pitches that just slow water runoff may require underlayment to prevent water backups from seeping into your home. This will also add to the roof replacement duration.

  • Your Property’s Historical Significance

Homes that have been listed among historical landmarks may require special attention during roof replacement to maintain their structural and historical integrity, subsequently adding to the duration of your project. You may also experience delays if you require special permits from your local government.

Roof replacement shouldn’t take several months in any case, but the factors discussed above directly affect how long you may have to wait before your roof replacement is complete. We recommend hiring a professional roofing company that can assess the amount of work needed and give you an accurate time frame for your roof replacement project.
