Ways to Make Your Laundry Routine More Eco-Friendly

You can make a significant impact by simply opting to buy slow fashion and washing your clothes in an eco-friendly way.

Don’t worry! You can easily follow this eco-friendly laundry routine to save, effort, money, and time. This will also result in less damage to your garments, making them last longer.

Tip 1: Opt for Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent

Phosphates improve the effectiveness of laundry detergents and can cause nutrient pollution when flushed into bodies of water.

Over-enriched water can promote the growth of plants and algae, causing a decrease in oxygen. Some companies stopped using detergents to avoid this issue.

That said, make sure you buy eco-friendly laundry detergents free of phosphates. In addition, avoid artificial fragrances as they are among the most toxic ingredients in any home product.

Tip 2: Refrain from Using the Dryer

Although most companies now offer eco-friendly washers and dryers, it is best not to use them because It isn’t cost-effective. You can reduce your energy consumption by getting rid of the dryer.

The dryer can be extremely harsh on fragile fabrics because the extreme heat can cause fading, shrinkage, and damage to your clothing, thus the need to buy new clothes in the long run.

Tip 3: Turn your Clothing Inside Out

This tip may be familiar. It isn’t just environmentally friendly, but it also increases the longevity of clothes.

To remove odors effectively, wash everything inside out. It keeps your clothes looking good and helps to prevent premature wear and tear.

Tip 4: Wash Some Items Less Often

If you wore your clothes only for a few hours, they don’t need washing just yet. Used jeans and outerwear may last for more than seven days without the need to be washed. Preferably, you can hang your clothes for an hour in the sun to refresh them.

You can also spray them with a mixture of vodka and water. Don’t worry. The vodka smell will vanish, and the alcohol will eventually help eliminate odors.

Tip 5: Wash Clothes Using Cold Water

If you use the cold water feature, you can save on electricity, and your clothes will not be prone to fading or bleeding. Plus, the fact that it’s also good to be resource-efficient.

You can also soak the laundry in cold water for an hour. Then add some baking soda to help loosen smudges and stains.

However, cold water may not always be applicable. There are specific instructions for some fabrics, such as nylon and spandex, to be washed with warm water as much as possible.

Tip 6: Remove Stains and Lighten Linen Without the use of Bleach

Vinegar, lemon, and peroxide are the keys to brightening laundry without harsh chemicals such as bleach. One-quarter cup of any of the ingredients is enough to bring back the whiteness of your clothes. Additionally, it would be best to hang your clothes to dry in direct sunlight.

Tip 7: Wash in Full Loads

One more common option to be eco-friendly is to refrain from washing clothes in small batches within a week. Keep in mind that even the most energy-efficient washing machines still use around 20- 25 gallons of water. Just think about how much water you can save by doing full loads.

Tip 8: Air Dry your Laundry

Summer is the best time to dry your clothes and linens in the sun instead of using your dryer. You can easily set up retractable clotheslines on your deck or balcony to dry your clothes cost-effectively.

This is a more sustainable option that will keep your clothes smelling fresh and clean. Also, you can use the sun to bleach stubborn stains.

Tip 9: Invest in Dryer Balls

You can use reusable dryer balls to reduce the time to dry clothes. These little wool balls can absorb moisture from clothes and reduce drying time. They can also soften and reduce wrinkles.

Top 10: Skip the Fabric Softener

Another critical change to make your laundry eco-friendly is getting rid of fabric softener. Although dryer sheets and liquid fabric softeners may seem innocent due to their cute mascots and fresh scents, they are among the most harmful items in your laundry area.

Switching to soap nuts can be an alternative if you don’t want to use any fabric softener. Moreover, soap nuts won’t leave behind a chemical residue that makes clothes stiff.

The Bottom Line

A few simple changes to your laundry routine could save water and energy and help you save money. You’ll also feel proud that you took another step towards making your home greener and more eco-friendly.

Do not make washing and drying clothes a tedious chore. These simple, eco-friendly laundry techniques will help you enjoy clean clothes and live a natural and sustainable lifestyle. Visit Farmington dry cleaners to help you out. They’re ready to lend a hand in keeping your clothes clean and fresh.
