If your roof is well managed, it can last for years and still be at its best.

On the other hand, if it’s not well maintained, it may get damaged in no distance time.

If you want your roof to last longer and not have to employ the services of a roofing contractor like Elo Restoration in Orlando FL regularly, there are some things you need to know.

Tree Branches

Have you ever seen the branches of a tree falling on top of a roof and damaging the roof? Well, whether you’ve seen it before or not, it actually happens. If you have a tall tree in your surroundings with branches extending over the roof of your house, such branches can break and fall during heavy ice or snow.

Wind can also cause it to break. Since the tree branch extends over your roof, there’s no question about the fact that the broken part will land on your roof, hence, damaging the roof. It may also be that the tree is weak as a result of the disease.

In that case, it doesn’t need a heavy wind or snow before it falls and lands on your roof. Aside from the branches falling off, trees may deposit leaves on your roof as well.

These leaves can rot on the roof and cause the roof to rotten as well. They can also result in the gutter being clogged, hence, providing space for water storage on your roof.

Insects can breed in such a part, and it’s only a matter of time before that specific part begins to leak. To avoid such damages, you should check the trees in your surrounding and ensure you cut off branches extending over your roof.

Strong Wind

Excessive wind can lift the shingles of your roof. In fact, if the wind is strong enough, it can blow off the shingles. When this happens, moisture may begin to slide through your roof. You’ll notice this well enough when it rains. Water may begin to pass through the parts with missing or damaged shingles.

The water can then penetrate from up down to your ceiling. From there, it can travel through your walls. If there’s heavy rain, your room may be flooded with water leaking from the faulty roof.

Continuous inspection of your roofing can help you avoid this. If you check your roofing from time to time, you’ll be able to know easily if the wind has caused any damage and you can fix it on time.

Heavy Rain or Hail

Heavy rain can also contribute to the damage of your roofing. The mineral coating that’s meant to protect your asphalt shingles may be weakened or even damaged by heavy rain. Once it’s damaged, there will be unprotected spots on your shingles.

As time goes on, ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun coupled with moisture can work against the shingles. Before you know what is happening, the shingle may finally be damaged.

Also, if you reside in an area that experiences so much hail, excessive pounding from the hails can weaken your roof, and eventually, it may get damaged and begin to leak when it rains.

Critters

Some creatures can damage your roof. Some of these creatures include birds, bats, squirrels, raccoons, and mice. They may choose your roof as a nesting place. If they’re allowed to continue moving around, these creatures can eventually damage your roof.

Birds, for example, can peck your roof. If such a bird has a really strong beak and it pecks on the same spot over and over, it may end up cracking the spot.

Squirrels, on the other hand, can use their sharp teeth to eat away your shingles. If they find food hiding under the shingles, they may begin to tear away the shingle, which can eventually result in damaging your roofing.

Ice and Snow

Whenever the temperature falls below the freezing point, ice may begin to form. If ice falls on your roof, it may remain there until it melts. So, what happens when it melts? The moisture may find its way under your shingles and ultimately damage your roofing.

The same thing applies to snow. If snow falls on your roof, and it later melts, its moisture may penetrate your shingle and then finally destroy your roofing. Once you find out your roofing is being damaged, you shouldn’t hesitate to contact a professional roofing company to help you fix it before the damage escalates.

These are some of the things that can damage your roof.
