I think it’s safe to say that all of us have, at one point, been relegated to an air mattress.
This may have happened on a crowded family trip in an RV, a camping excursion, or in the process of moving houses where your real mattress hadn’t come in yet.
Personally, I can remember a few very long nights unable to sleep as the air slowly but surely creeping out of the air mattress I was trying to sleep on.
By the end of the night, it looked like it was trying to eat me as I had sunk in so far as to be almost completely obscured from view. While kind of funny, it’s definitely not something that I would wish on other people.
Fortunately, air mattresses are quite good these days and do keep their air very reliably. Of course, there are bad brands out there and this is why I’m going to help you understand what to consider before choosing an air mattress.
Air Mattresses are Great for Back Pain
One of the best types of mattresses to help alleviate back pain are air mattresses. This is because you can select just how firm you want your mattress to be.
You might want a softer bed to help you relieve back pain and being able to do that while on the road is definitely a benefit. Additionally, it can also help to better contour your body.
A great benefit of having an air mattress especially when travelling in an RV is that you can create custom firmness preferences. This means that you select just how firm or soft you want the surface to be.
This is very useful as having to stay in hotels means you are unable to choose just how soft or hard the hotel bed can be. This is perfect as people all have different surfaces they prefer to sleep on.
Many Uses While Camping
Having an air mattress when travelling means that it has numerous usage cases. It can be a cushion to sit on during the day and a full bed at night. It can be filled up using a battery-powered pump or from the main power source of your RV.
This type of flexibility is extra helpful when on a camping trip in an RV, camper, or trailer. Air mattresses are even more helpful in an RV as space is so limited.
Great for Kids and Parents Alike
Air beds are actually even better for kids.
One reason is that kids are smaller and can therefore fit on a smaller bed. This is important because smaller beds cost less money and are easier to transport.
It’s also worth noting that kids also weigh less, meaning the odds that the air mattress will deflate is far lower. For a few recommendations for air mattresses for kids and toddlers click here.
Having an air mattress with you when travelling in your camper can be quite useful when the only other option you have would be to share a bed with someone.
With an air mattress, you can even have someone share it with you. You get 2 inner chambers which can be separated, ensuring that you are always comfortable regardless of where you are.
This can be particularly useful when you are travelling home for the holidays and the traditional beds are all taken.
Air mattresses made from PVC materials have been designed to be hard-wearing. This means that they can last for a longer period compared to other types of mattresses such as innerspring, latex, or foam.
While these conventional types last for about 10 years, air mattresses can last for a minimum of 15 years without you feeling any discomfort.
This type of durability is really important when camping as you never know what the ground you put it on is going to be like. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of nowhere in your tent or your RV and getting a hole in your air bed.
Air Mattresses are Easy to Transport in Your RV
Should you happen to be the type of person that enjoys exploring the world out there, then having an air mattress in your mobile home can be a great choice.
Compared to sleeping bags, air mattresses do more than just keep you warm. They also help to protect your body from the terrible discomfort of having to sleep on the ground on your camping trips. Air mattresses are all about comfort.
All you have to do is grab your air mattress with you on your next camping trip and you can now enjoy all the benefits and comforts of your bedroom without the additional weight.
An air mattress can even be quite useful for sleepovers at a family member or friend’s place where an extra bedroom is unavailable. Just throw it in your airstream or camper, get your portable pump and you’re good to go.
To add to the point above, air mattresses can be seamlessly inflated to their original size using pumps. Generally, if the pump is of good quality, it takes just about 3 minutes for an air mattress to be inflated for usage.
