Having your air conditioning unit break is always frustrating, especially during the summer. Not only do you have to live in hot and uncomfortable conditions, but now there is added stress on you about how much this will cost you.

When your air conditioner breaks, you can do some simple things like contacting Landmark Air for AC repairs and maintenance.

We understand the system should bring home comfort, besides providing high-quality service: year-after-year. The AC should be designed and built to maximize energy efficiency and indoor air quality; while minimizing operating costs.

Such a system will keep your family comfortable all year long, but what happens if it fails? Let’s dive deeper into possible remedies.

Consider Your Options

When your air conditioning breaks, most people follow one of two paths. They try to fix their air conditioner, or they call a maintenance specialist.

Fixing your air conditioner involves tools, reading, and possibly some trial and error. If you do it wrong, you risk wasting a lot of time or could cause more damage. And if your AC is too old or too complicated for do-it-yourselfers, you may be stuck with a repairman who charges more than the unit is worth.

Calling a technician is safer, especially if your AC is under warranty. And it is not as expensive as you might think. But there are a few catches. The technician may charge you for time, even though you didn’t ask him to come. (This is not unusual.)

The technician may charge you for parts, even though you didn’t ask him to order them. (This is not unusual either.)

The technician may charge you for the hour he spent on the phone, even though you asked him to fix your air conditioner. (This is common, and it’s what the company that owns the repair company pays him.)

Your options depend a lot on where you live. On many occasions, you will have to call someone to fix the problem. In other instances, you may be able to fix it yourself. But when hiring a contractor, know that there are good and bad companies. So, you have to take the best action as per your situation.

Get Familiar with Your HVAC Systems

When the air conditioner is leaking, the fan is noisy; the thermostat is acting up, there’s something you should do. And it has to be done swiftly to save time.

When the air conditioner is leaking, the first thing you do is check the outside unit. If there is any sign of leakage, you will need to call a technician. However, if there is no sign of leakage, you will need to check the inside unit.

However, before doing it, remember that this is not always an option. For example, the air conditioner is old, and there is a good chance the compressor is shot, you will need to call a technician who understands the AC better than you.

If the air conditioner is fairly new, and the compressor is still working, but it’s running slowly, you will need to change the thermostat. If the thermostat is working correctly, but the air conditioner is still leaking, you will need to call a technician.

If the air conditioner leaks and the compressor is shot, you need to consult further or seek a technician’s assistance. When the air conditioner leaks and the fan is noisy, you will need to change the fan.

In the event you realize other problems, it would be better not to handle the air conditioner but seek help from a technician promptly to know where the problem is and correct it.

Ask Others for Advice

It’s important to share with people your problem, like when the AC is broken. They may be able to help you. If they know you’re local, they might even stop by, check it out, and correct it if they have some skills.

Most of the time, it isn’t that complicated. Maybe you turned it on, and then the breaker tripped. Or perhaps the capacitor went bad. Whatever it is, tell them. They may act upon the problem or suggest a reliable company in the neighborhood that may have done repairs.

If not, you’ll have to call a professional. If the AC is old, a professional may be able to fix it. It may cost more, but a professional will probably do a better job if you don’t have the time or inclination.

Remember, when your HVAC system breaks, it brings a lot of confusion that may lead to further damage. The tips provided may help you solve the problem and have your AC functioning well for its lifetime.
