Everything You Need to Know About When to Resurface Your Pool

Of course, the real dream is a proper in-ground pool. This can be covered to make it part of your home and usable throughout the year.

However, while a pool is a worthwhile investment and adds value to your home . You have to design the right one and be mindful of the maintenance.

Most Common Maintenance Issues

A swimming pool needs to have the water checked daily. This ensures it is safe to swim in. The most common way to do this is by adding chlorine, although some pools use sand or even salt to filter the water.

But, whatever the approach, your pool is constantly underwater and exposed to the power of the sun.

The result of this exposure is the slow, but natural, deterioration of the cement, and pool plaster. In short, your pool will need periodic resurfacing if you want to keep the water in it and enjoy it.

Experts recommend it should be done no longer than every ten years. However, every pool is different. Depending on the conditions it faces, you may need to do it anywhere between 3-10 years.

Resurfacing The Pool

The most common approach is to replaster the pool. This can be a long process, potentially taking two people a minimum of 20 hours to resurface a medium-sized pool.

However, a faster and potentially better solution is to use epoxy floor coatings. These can be applied to existing cement and will cure quickly, minimizing the amount of time the pool is out of use.

It’s possible to do epoxy floor coatings yourself although it is generally preferable to get the professionals involved.

After all, if you make a mistake you’re going to need to start the process all over again. When that means draining hundreds or thousands of liters of water for a second time, it quickly becomes an unattractive option.

Signs Your Pool Needs Resurfacing

If you think that you can leave your pool a little longer before resurfacing then take a closer look at the pool. If any of the following signs are visible you shouldn’t wait to get the pool resurfaced.

Water Level Dropping

If your water levels are consistently dropping and it’s not likely to be evaporation, you have a leak. The only question is where.

Visible Cracks

Visible cracks mean the floor covering is starting to break up. If you don’t take steps to repair it you may find that the water disappears much faster than you expect.

Chalky Appearance at the Side of the Pool

A chalky substance of tiles and even at the edge of the water tells you the floor and even the walls are starting to break down. They are, after all, under attack by chlorine daily.

Rough Surfaces

A rough surface where it used to be smooth tells you the floor is already badly damaged and needs to be dealt with urgently.

Peeling Plaster

Peeling plaster is an obvious sign that there is an issue. It shouldn’t look like this.

In short, get the professionals to resurface your pool as soon as possible.
