Having an above-ground pool has its perks, especially during the summer. However, there usually comes a time you need to dismantle it.

Maybe you need to change the location to create more space. Moving an above-ground pool as a whole can be stressful. Sometimes, these pools get old, dirty, and unappealing.

How to Disassemble an Above Ground Pool

In this article, you will find out step by step how to take down a swimming pool.

Step 1 – Drain the Pool

Drain the Pool

The very first step in getting rid of your above-ground pool is to drain the water.

Depending on how frequently you use the pool, the water might be contaminated and dirty.

To drain your pool, the easiest tool to use is a pump. If you own one, that is great. However, you can also rent or borrow from a neighbor.

If you are unable to get a pump, don’t fret. There are other means to drain water out of the pool. One of these is the Suction method.

To do this, all you need is a long hose. Find the nearest drain to get rid of the water, with one end of the hose in the pool and the other end at the drain.

Then suck the air out of the hose to get the water moving. Be careful while doing this, so you do not take in any of the pool water.

Step 2 – Get rid of all accessories

If you love having fun in your pool, or you have kids who play in there. You might have several accessories in and around the pool.

Start removing flotation devices as well as toys out of the pool. You can do this while the water is draining.

Anything not connected to the frame should be removed. Things like return inlet, alarms, and lights should be removed.

Step 3 – Remove and clean the Filtration System

Remove and clean the Filtration System

At this point, you must have had almost all the water out of the pool. When the filtration outlets and inlets are visible, the next thing is to take out the filtration pump. Then clean out the debris in the pump basket.

Suppose your filtration system has a skimmer installed with it. You will need to take this apart too.

If you had it set up yourself, taking it apart should not be an issue. However, you can check out videos online to see how to go about this.

Clean, dry, and package the filtration system and ensure you store it in a dry place.

Step 4 – Take apart the frame

The step might seem confusing at first, seeing the huge structure in front of you.

However, what you need to do is take note of how the parts are assembled. You can check the product’s manual for this.

Most above-the-ground pools usually come with a metal frame structure. In this step, you will find out how to go about the metal frame pool disassembly.

Take out the caps covering the posts holding the pool walls upright. You should now see the screws holding all the pieces together.

Unscrew them with a screwdriver. This can take a while; make sure you take out all the screws and pack them in a box.

Check the integrity of the pool liner; if it is reusable, you might want to pack it up. Detach the strips that hold it up, fold it, and pack it away from sunlight.

Step 5 – Detach and roll up the wall

Detach and roll up the wall

After taking apart the frame and folding up the vinyl, you are left with the wall.

Check if the metal sides are salvageable; if they are, you should unscrew it and roll it up.

You can dispose of them if they are too rusty. Just cut them into smaller pieces with heavy-duty metal cutters.

Step 6 – Package and store the equipment

If you have in mind to reuse or sell any of the components, then you need to properly store them.

You should have boxes and bags readily available to store the pieces. You should also write down each item you have stored.

This would make it easier to unpack in the future. Store the equipment somewhere warm.
