  1. Use Wine Bottles to Keep Plants Watered

Gardening is tasking and this is why some owners don’t consider planting flowers around the backyard. Imagine the stress associated with watering the plants every day especially during the hot summer days. If you have already set up a backyard garden, how about using the empty wine bottles to water the plants?

Wondering how this will work? Well, just fill the wine bottle with water and stick it with the open end on the growing media. The growing media will slowly suckup the water and keep the plant watered throughout. Choose larger size wine bottles if you will be away for a long time.

  1. Cinnamon Powder Prevents Damping off Diseases in Seedlings

Plant health is another cause of concern among homeowners. Plants are prone to diseases and this is a major challenge gardener’s face. For instance, the damping – off disease, caused by the fungus is a serious problem that you need to fight in plants.

Did you know that cinnamon powder has anti-fungal qualities and will keep off damping-off disease? Use the cinnamon powder to fight diseases that affect the seedlings. Find out more about the effectiveness of cinnamon in preventing plant disease.

  1. Make a Watering Can out Plastic Milk Container

The used milk container can be used to make a very good watering can. Punch holes on the cap using a sharp nail or the thumbtack. You can heat up the nail over a frame for about 30 seconds. You can use pliers to hold the nail to avoid burning yourself.

Make sure that the holes are small in size such that the water flows out smoothly without affecting the germinating seedlings. Add water into the bottle and return the cap. Tilt the bottle to water your plants.

  1. Use Coffee Grounds as a Natural Slug Deterrent

If you love gardening and have admiration for nature, it is important you create a balanced ecosystem to ensure the plants and insects thrive. However, some creatures are an eyesore to homeowners especially when they inhibit your backyard.

A good example is the slugs. Don’t use the commercial slug killers that might be toxic to your pets, kill your plants and the birds. You can use the coffee ground to create a balanced ecosystem and keep the slugs at bay ensuring that the plants will thrive.

  1. Citrus Peel can be used for Starting Seeds

Do you know that the citrus peel can be used for germinating seeds? Just poke a hole in the bottom of the peel so that it can act as drainage in case of excess water. Fill the citrus peel with soil or an alternative growing medium and then sow the seeds. Ensure that the seeds are watered until they germinate. When the seedling is ready for transplanting, remove it from the citrus peel and plant it directly on soil or in an alternative container.

The advantage of using the natural citrus peel is that it will easily decompose and so it is not harmful to the environment. This is in comparison to the plastic bags used for starting the seeds.

  1. Use Vinegar for Weed Removal

Weeds causing you nightmare every time you try backyard gardening? If you have very limited time for weeding. Spray vinegar directly on the weeds. This will effectively get rid of the weeds menace. After making a cup of coffee, the excess hot water can be used for flushing the growing weeds.
