Common signs that you need to replace your windows are that they no longer open and close the way they used to, and they are letting in cold air. Getting a new set of windows could also give your home a significant facelift and improve your property value.

If you require an expert window replacement in Syracuse, NY, you may need to learn the overall cost of window replacement so you can keep the project within your set budget.

The national average cost for window replacement is $100 to $650 per window. A typical window replacement project is likely to cost between $200 and $1,800 per window because many factors are accounted for when setting the price tag for a window replacement.

These factors include glass type, window frame material, window type and location, your geographical location, and labor costs.

Window Material

During a window replacement project, you have the luxury of choosing what kind of material you would like for your window frame. Common window frame materials include vinyl, fiberglass, wood, composite, and aluminum. Each of these window frame materials has unique prices, advantages, and disadvantages.

The most popular window frame material is vinyl because it is very affordable, energy-efficient, and durable. Standard vinyl frames have a price range of $100 to $900 per window. Wood frames provide a classic architectural aesthetic but can be pretty high maintenance. Wooden window frames will cost you between $150 and $1,300.

Fiberglass window frames are much more durable than vinyl and are on the pricier end costing between $500 and $1,500 per window. Composite window frames range from $300 and $1,200 per window. Aluminum frames are the cheapest material and cost between $75 to $400 per window because they offer inferior insulation compared to other materials.

Window Type

The type of windows on your house will undoubtedly affect the total window replacement cost. Each window type best serves a specific purpose, and typically the larger the window, the higher the cost of replacement. The most common types of windows are single-hung, double-hung, bow, bay sliding, storm, and custom pocket.

Number of Glass Panes

If your windows have multiple glass panes, they will typically cost more to replace. Bow windows usually have a minimum of five panes and cost between $1,000 and $4,500. Bay windows have three glass panes and cost around $1,800 on average.

Glass Size and Type

The type of glass you choose to replace your windows can help lower utility bills by boosting energy efficiency. Some home locations and ages are best served by tempered glass, which is sometimes legally required.

Tinted glass is recommended for avoiding harmful ultraviolet rays in extremely sunny regions. In some geographical locations, impact-resistant glass is recommended.

Window Location

Your basement windows will not have the exact replacement cost as those in your attic and upper floors. Window replacements in some areas tack on additional charges per window. Bedroom or bathroom windows cost about $300 to $700 each.

Dining room or foyer windows are also in the same range, but the cost can double or triple if the windows are bay, bow, or large picture. Basement window replacements can cost as little as $250 or $1,000 or more. Egress windows that provide extra escape routes out of the house in emergency cases can cost between $2,000 to $5,000.

Age of House

If your home is older than 70 years, it will cost up to three times more than the projected pricing. This is because older homes present unique challenges like filling in empty spaces with insulation, damaged or rotting trim that requires repair or replacement, removing counterweights, matching the historical architecture, and unusual window sizes that call for custom windows.

Labor and Work

Skilled labor is essential to the success of your window replacement project. The average labor cost for window replacement is $40 per hour. Labor costs vary due to the expertise required for correct installation, window location, and size.

The hourly price is $30 to $65. You are likely to save on the hourly rate if you replace more than one window. The labor cost will be higher if your home requires custom windows. Urban areas have higher hourly rates because of a higher cost of living.

Structural repairs, waterproofing, disposal, job location, insulation, and clean-up costs add to the total replacement cost. Insulation and waterproofing can cost you between $450 to $3,000.

Disposal of all job-related debris and the clean-up of the interior and exterior spaces is usually added to your tab at an extra cost.
