Over the years, home design has undergone a significant transformation, particularly in terms of floor plan layouts.

While it was once popular to break spaces up into multiple, smaller areas, that approach is now somewhat out of style. This is largely thanks to the fact that open-concept homes have become increasingly popular among homeowners and designers alike.

What is an Open-Concept Home?

First off, what does open concept actually mean? An open-concept home is one with a layout that encourages an unobstructed flow between living areas, with the living room, dining room, and kitchen often being one single expansive space. This tends to mean eliminating the walls that separate these spaces, creating a spacious feel that allows for a seamless transition between rooms.

Designing an open-concept home is all about creating a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable space. There are several factors that go into creating such a space; among others, these include the layout of the home, the use of colors, lighting, and furniture.

Planning the Layout

The layout of an open-concept home needs to be planned out carefully, to ensure that you achieve an optimally functional use of the space. To make it work, you need to create a sense of continuity between the living spaces while maintaining a certain amount of the distinct functions of each area.

The placement of furniture, the arrangement of various appliances, and the way that you encourage the flow of traffic are all things that need to be taken into consideration.

The use of Colour

The use of color is absolutely critical to overall success in open-concept home design. Neutral color schemes are frequently used to create a sense of flow throughout the various connected spaces; however, pops of color can be used to add a little variation between areas such as the kitchen and the living room.

Lighting

Lighting is also a crucial element in open-concept home design. The right lighting can highlight the unique features of each space – for example, you may want bright lighting in a working area, but then softer lighting around areas you want to relax in.

To achieve this, you’ll need to incorporate different lighting sources, such as natural sunlight, floor lamps, and task lighting, to create a layered effect that adds depth to the living spaces. To optimize your approach to natural light, you’ll want to look at various curtain options from a supplier like Woodyatt Curtains, to ensure that you’re getting things just right.

Furniture

Next up, furniture – as with any home, the pieces you choose need to be comfortable, functional and stylish. However, with open-concept homes, you need to make sure that each piece also goes well with the rest of the space that it’s in. For example, a bright blue stool in the kitchen could clash with a green sofa in the living area.

Clearly, there’s a lot going on for open-concept homes, but they do require a bit of planning. With careful consideration when it comes to layout, color schemes, and the furniture you choose, you should be well on track to creating the open-plan layout that you’ve always dreamed of.
