The air conditioning system is an important part of any building. The system offers property owners the comfort needed to enjoy their indoor space.

Air conditioning systems modify the temperature of the indoor space by keeping it cool. A major component of any air conditioning unit is the compressor.

Common Issues with AC Compressors

Any HVAC Contractor will agree that a compressor is the heart of the air conditioning unit. The compressor is the most expensive component in the unit and it aids in keeping the indoor space cool.

Any problem with the compressor means problems with the air conditioner.

How Air Conditioner Compressor Works

The compressor is located in the outdoor unit of the air conditioner. It circulates the refrigerant through the coils during the heat exchange process.

This basic component serves as the energy source of the air conditioning system. The cooling process begins with the compressor’s motor which powers the compressor using a piston and cylinder.

From the motors, the compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant as it leaves the evaporator coils.

The increase in temperature caused by the compressor causes the refrigerant to move heat from inside the home to the condenser.

The condense then cools down the heat using the incoming refrigerant vapor. The rise in pressure causes the refrigerant to move to the indoor unit thus causing a cooling effect.

This process is rapidly repeated over and over again to keep the indoor space cool.

Common Causes of Air Conditioner Compressor Failure

Several reasons can be responsible for air conditioner compressor failure. While the compressor is one of the most expensive parts of the cooling unit, most of the problems affecting it aren’t as expensive as one would think.

In some cases, air conditioner compressor failure may be due to simple issues like clogged air filters.

However, it is best to reach out to an HVAC contractor when compressor problems have been diagnosed. Waiting a long time before the issue is resolved can lead to more damaging effects causing more expensive repairs or replacements.

Although compressor failures are common, most types of failures can be avoided when minor issues are addressed early.

Minor issues affecting the air conditioner’s compressor can be identified during inspection and maintenance.

Once detected, they can be addressed. Below are some of the common issues that cause air conditioner compressor failure.

Electrical Issues

One of the biggest causes of air conditioner compressor problems is electrical issues. Electrical issues can cause permanent damage to the home’s air conditioner compressor system and other parts.

Electrical issues that are capable of causing this magnitude of damage often require professional attention.

Common electrical issues affecting the air conditioning unit often cause a buildup of harmful acids.

With a qualified technician and electrician, acid buildup will be investigated, the wiring will be repaired or replaced, the damaged fuse will be replaced, and other issues addressed.

The following links offer a variety of electrical training courses, assisting your development for a career in the electrical industry.

Improperly Sized Suction Lines

This problem is usually attributed to bad workmanship from the HVAC technician. When you hire an unqualified technician to install your air conditioner, there is a high chance that they may use a suction line that doesn’t fit.

The suction line may be too big or small and this causes the compressor to break down over time. This breakdown can lead to costly repairs.

To avoid this problem, ensure that a professional is hired to handle the job. If the problem already exists, contact a professional to address the repair needs.

Too Much Refrigerant in the Air Conditioner

Refrigerants are an important part of the air conditioning unit. However, too little or too much refrigerant can affect the functionality of the unit.

If your air conditioner has too much refrigerant in it, it can affect the compressor. The compressor may also be affected if the wrong type of refrigerant has been used.

It is best to hire the right type of HVAC contractor for your air conditioning installation and maintenance needs. With the right contractor, you’ll be able to avoid this problem.

Refrigerant Leaks

As stated before, too much or too little refrigerant can cause a problem in your air conditioner’s compressor.

If your air conditioners’ refrigerant is leaking – whether due to cracks or holes, you can expect the refrigerant level to drop and this can significantly affect the health of your compressor.

Low refrigerant levels mean that your compressor will be under undue pressure to push refrigerant through the system. This can cause the compressor to break down.
