Recently bought an air purifier for your home but unsure about running it all day long? Let us answer all your burning questions regarding the usage of air purifiers in one go.

How does an Air Purifier work?

Air purifiers work by pushing air through the filters to remove pollutants and have a pretty simple set-up: there’s a fan that sucks in and one or more filters.

These filters are usually made of paper, fiberglass, or a mesh, which catch and neutralize pollutants as air passes over them before releasing the clean air into the living space.

Should You Ever Turn Off Your Air Purifier?

Every time you turn off the purifier, pollutants begin to collect inside it, making it difficult for the purifier to do its job. Leaving the air purifier on constantly will remove new contaminants as they enter the atmosphere.

Where Are All These Contaminants Coming From?

The air in your home is constantly going through changes. Indoor pollutants get released when you turn on the stove, open a package, fold clothes, or use fragrant products. Not to mention all the shedding if you have any pets.

Outdoor pollutants contaminate your home’s air quality; come inside whenever you open a window, enter your house, or let someone else in. Because our homes aren’t perfectly sealed, outdoor pollutants seep inside even if you keep the windows and doors closed.

So I Can Leave it on All Day?

Yes! Leave your air purifier on all day. It will remove dirt, allergens, smoke, and unpleasant smells from your indoor air. The longer you leave it on, the cleaner your air will be.

There’s no consequence to leaving your air purifier on for hours on end. They are built for this.

But What About the Cost?

The quintessential energy company charges you based on the kW hours you use per month. Because the typical purifier uses 50 watts of electricity per hour, you need to use it for 20 hours to raise your bill by 1kW hour.

Generally, the standard kilowatt-hour costs around 12 cents in the USA, so if you multiply the standard purifier kW per hour by the total hours in a day by the cost per kW, you get 14.4 cents per day.

Therefore, constantly using your air purifier every day for one year will cost you around $50, which is way below that of many household appliances.

Are There Any Times That You Shouldn’t Run Your Air Purifier?

While it is suggested to leave your purifier on continuously, there may come times in which the turning on the purifier may become a safety hazard, such as:

  1. Ozone purifiers: Any purifier that produces ozone is a health hazard and should not be used in the presence of human beings.
  2. Damaged cord: Devices with damaged power cords act as fire hazards and must be replaced before someone gets hurt.
  3. Expired filter: even though a worn-out, expired filter isn’t usually a safety hazard, it does not help keep your indoor air clean at all.

Final Thoughts

It is entirely safe and very affordable to run your air purifier all day long. Just make sure that it’s in mint condition to present no other problems in functioning.

Also, have it cleaned at regular intervals to prevent dirt from accumulating inside the device.
