Since bad things can happen to anyone at any time, one should prepare himself to overcome the problem.

For instance, picking a car lock can save you from a lot of trouble here. Therefore, we are sharing with you a how-to guide, letting you know a few quick and handy tips to pick a car lock.

First, Understanding Your Car Lock

Before you start picking a lock, you should know which type of lock your car door has. Since, due to technology, modern locks of various advanced locking mechanisms have been installed, you will need special tools to pick a lock.

Without these tools and skills, you can’t expect to open them. Old model cars with manual locks are easy to pick compared to ones with remote control locking systems.

Methods to Pick a Car Lock

Bobby Pin Method

A pair of thin metal bobby pins along with a pair of pliers are your picking tools for this method. Pliers are used to bending the bobby pins.

Take one of the pins and bend 1/3 of it to make a hook shape. Do this on both sides in the same direction. Now, take another pin and bend it apart to make an L.

Stick up to 1 cm of the tip of the pin inside the car keyhole and bend again. While inserting the tension lever in the keyhole at the bottom, start turning it clockwise.

Now, all you’ve to do is exert pressure (neither too little nor too high). Meanwhile, you can insert the pick in the keyhole on the upper side, moving it up and down to pick up the combination.

Auto Jiggler Method

A set of automotive bump keys are required in this method. It is one of the easiest lock picking methods; it depends on luck and can unlock car models before 2005.

Insert the jiggler (bump key) into the lock and besides producing some tension, keep moving the key up and down. Try different movements with a set of bump keys you have and be patient since it takes time.

A standard auto jiggler is called a double wafer which can be used for some modern cars as well if they don’t have the digital lock chip mechanism.

Shoestring Method

Does opening a locked car door with a shoestring sound crazy? Well, it works if your car door lock opens by pulling up.

Take a shoestring and tie a slip knot right in the middle of it without tightening the knot.

Then holding both ends of the shoelace, slide it from the upper corner of the door into your car. Try to make this loop reach around the lock and then tighten it to pull up. This method may need more than one attempt so, be patient and keep trying for a few more seconds.

Coat Hanger Method

Picking a car lock using a coat hanger takes much time, so one must be patient while making several attempts to pick a lock.

However, the hard work pays off as you will learn how to employ this technique and can also save a few hundred bucks by opening a locked car door yourself.

Take a wire coat hanger and create a hook at one of its ends by untwisting. Then, insert this wire hanger with a hook inside the weather stripping of your window.

Now, all you have to do is keep your senses alert to the sounds you hear when the wire hanger hits any part inside the car door. Since you are finding the locking mechanism that you can’t see directly, you’ve to imagine in your mind and proceed with it accordingly.

Remember to be gentle while jiggling the wire hanger inside the lock, or you can mess it up.

Slim Jim Method

I suppose you all have seen this method to pick up a car lock in Hollywood movies several times. Some of you might have even learned it from there.

However, it’s not just in movies but; you can certainly employ this method to pick a car lock. The principle to apply this method is almost similar to the wire coat hanger, only the picking tool is different hence, called slim jim.

The slim jim is a 1.5 to 2 ft long, flat metal sheet. We use it the same way as a wire coat hanger by inserting it inside the weather stripping and the car window.

The aim is to find the locking mechanism, so you keep the metal sheet pulling up and under the door lock. When you see the car lock moving, move the slim jim around and lift it, so the lock opens.

Again, this method is effective for traditional-style locks that have an upright locking mechanism.

Screwdriver and Rod Method

Caution: It’s one of the dangerous methods as there are chances of damaging your car if you don’t handle the tools carefully.

What you have to do is find a rod with a hook at one end and a screwdriver. Placing the screwdriver between the car’s body and the door, you have to exert some force to move the door a bit apart.

This is to produce a small gap so you can slide the rod inside the car and access the unlock button to press it. Hurrah! The lock will be opened in less than a minute.

Summing-Up

The methods we have covered here to pick a car lock will be effective in most cases, and you may look cool in front of your friends or colleagues to open a locked car door without keys.

However, always remember to stay calm and patient while attempting to pick a car lock to avoid any damage to the lock.

Depending upon your skills, convenience, and access to the tools at the moment, you can choose one method from the above list.
