Home Care vs. Nursing Home: Find the Right One

There comes a time in everyone’s life when we have to arrange both medical and non-medical assistance for our parents.

The majority of us consider sending our aging parents to nursing homes mandatory as they have the reputation of providing the best medical and medical services. Some advanced nursing homes have medically trained nurses and even physicians for emergencies.

A huge number of the world’s population totally goes against the idea of sending aging parents to senior centers or nursing homes. If we see it from the elderly’s point of view, they would also be against the idea of joining the nursing home.

Even if we try to take two people’s views on whether you should send your parents to nursing homes or not, we would not be able to reach a decision.

In this article, we’ll get logical about these two different options. Let’s start with home care first!

Home Care vs. Nursing Home: Find the Right One

Home Care

By home care, we can derive two meanings; keeping the elderly home without any professional aid or keeping the elderly home under strict full-time professional home caregivers. The best homecare agency can be found by searching for home care in Naperville.

Pros

  • The elderly can spend the rest of their life in the comfort of their home.
  • They would be spending time with their kids and grandkids.
  • They won’t feel alone or left out.
  • The environment would be comfortable and familiar.
  • They would be less dependent.
  • You won’t be paying several thousand dollars yearly.

Cons

  • You would still need a medically trained nurse.
  • You may not be able to handle the emergency medical situation well.
  • You may not be able to follow the doctor’s directions properly.
  • The elderly health situation can worsen if proper care is not given.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are the elderly’s biggest nightmare even though they offer the best medical and non-medical assistance. The staff at nursing homes do not just try to keep the elderly physically but mentally healthy as well.

Pros

  • The staff is well trained for handling both medical and non-medical emergencies.
  • The elderly can make new friends.
  • They would be under strict care 24/7.
  • They would adopt a healthier lifestyle.
  • Nursing homes are safer and more secure for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • You can visit your loved ones anytime you want.

Cons

  • Nursing homes are super expensive; some of the well-reputed nursing homes are charging more than $80,000 annually.
  • Nursing homes take away the elderly’s independence.
  • Since the staff has no blood relation with the elderly they are usually cold and rude.

Conclusion

Both nursing home and home care have noticeable advantages and disadvantages. Both caregiving methods are not fully good or faulty.

If the elderly’s health situation can’t be handled at home, nursing homes are suitable and safe but if your aging parents are healthy and active it’s cruel to send them to nursing homes, home care would be the best option.

Lastly, I hope you find this article helpful in decision-making. To get the best advice, take the doctor’s guidance and see what they suggest.
