Spring Chores: Getting Your Yard Ready for the Warmer Weather

As winter departs, spring arrives, with birds, flowers, and bees. The grass stretches toward the sunlight, and the light lasts longer during the day. You may feel happy again if you’ve felt blue throughout the dark winter months.

At this point, you might contact an HVAC company like the Otter Guys so they can check out your central air unit. You’ll use it during the summer, so you should do the yearly inspection to ensure it’s ready for use.

You can also look over your yard and get it ready. Here are some things you should look into as you get prepared to spend more time outdoors.

Do You Need New Mulch?

You might have patches in or around your yard where you’ve planted flowers and other plants. You may notice that in some of these sections, you don’t have mulch covering the ground anymore.

To maintain those sections, you’ll probably buy new mulch yearly and put down a fresh layer. That encourages new growth if you have annuals that will reappear soon.

You may also notice that squirrels, birds, and other creatures have disturbed the mulch, and the ground shows some bare or uneven patches. Getting some mulch during the annual spring sales at Home Depot or Lowes and putting it down in a uniform layer makes sense.

Open the Shed

If you have a shed, you might open it and see whether you have everything you need for the spring. If you have a wheelbarrow for the mulch, you can get that out. If you have a bird feeder, you might get that out and hang it up again. Maybe you have some dog toys you stowed in there if you own a dog.

You can buy a new shed if you don’t have one. Maybe you don’t own one yet, and instead, you haul your seasonal items out of the garage or basement.

That might work, but you should at least consider buying a shed if you have a convenient place. You can buy one from Amazon and easily assemble it, or you might also get a preassembled one from a home and garden center. They can usually deliver it right to you.

See Whether You Should Plant New Grass

You should also look over your grass and see how it’s doing. You might see some bare or patchy sections. If you have a dog that does its business back there, some grass might die each year.

You may also see sections where squirrels tore up looking for the nuts they stored. You may notice that some sections haven’t done well if they don’t get as much sun as other areas.

You can buy some grass seed and put down a layer. You can get the sun and shade kind if you have a yard that doesn’t get the same amount of sun throughout the day.

Now, you’ll have a yard you can enjoy throughout the spring.
