How To Decide Whether to Replace or Repair Your Air Con

It’s not just about getting a reprieve from the heat outside, cooler room temperatures have been shown to improve performance in the workplace and focus at home.

But, like all good appliances, there comes a time when you need to replace them. The question is when replacing is a better option than repairing?

Excessive Repairs

If your air conditioning breaks you’ll probably have it fixed without thinking too much about it. After all, even with servicing from the experts in industrial air conditioning, there are times when things simply go wrong.

But, if you find that you are constantly having to sort repairs and maintenance for your air conditioning unit, it’s time to replace it.

The cost of several repairs will quickly outweigh the cost of replacing, especially as there are likely to be more repairs to come.

Age

One of the most obvious signs that your air conditioning no longer needs repairing is age.

Electrical appliances have a limited lifespan, most air conditioners are doing well if they last 10-12 years. As soon as your unit passes this age, you’ll be wanting to look at replacing it.

It’s not just more economical to replace instead of repair, modern units are more efficient and environmentally friendly, making them a better option for the planet and your wallet.

Energy Bills are Increasing

It’s no surprise that the cost of energy is rising, this is partly to do with the global energy crisis. But, if you think your energy bill is rising even quicker than expected then you may be looking at a malfunctioning air conditioner.

Assuming your usage has remained relatively static, energy bill increases are usually a result of aging appliances that no longer work efficiently.

If your air-con unit falls into this category then you should be, looking to replace the unit. The savings on your energy bills will help to cover the cost of your new unit.

Your Unit Uses R-22 Freon

As of 2020 Freon will no longer be available. This is because it has a negative impact on the environment. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to instantly replace your unit. But, you do need to be aware of this issue.

In short, if your unit develops a refrigerant leak then you won’t be able to replace the refrigerant and you’ll have to replace the unit.

Verify what refrigerant your unit uses and you’ll be able to plan to replace it if necessary. It’s better than getting a nasty and unexpected shock.

Other Factors

If your air conditioner starts to make strange noises or smells then you’ll need to get it checked out In many cases the issue will be simple and can be repaired. But, there are times when it is more serious and you’ll have no choice but to replace your unit.

The secret is to develop a relationship with an air conditioning company you can trust. At least then you’ll be confident that the unit really does need replacing.
