Cheap Garden Tips: How to Save Money on Garden Fertilizer

One of the most important things you can do for your garden is to add fertilizer to your plants This ensures that the plants remain healthy by getting the minerals and vitamins that they need. Here are some ways to save money when purchasing garden fertilizer for plants.

First of all, do not purchase the cheap stuff. It may seem like a good way to cut costs, but you will be disappointed in the results. The cheap stuff really isn’t as effective and it won’t save you money in the long run. If you are looking for ways to save money, then this shouldn’t be the one you choose. You will end up buying more product and spending more money over time. This is a case when buying a quality product, in the beginning, may cost a little more, but will save you lots of time.

Make sure that you understand what garden fertilizer you are getting. Read the labels. Follow the application rates and don’t be tempted to take a shortcut. If the label says to just use a little, don’t use a lot thinking it will be even better. This will usually end up damaging or even killing your plants.

On the other hand, don’t use less than the label recommends either. Your plants will not get the nutrients it needs and you will not be happy with the results. Following the directions on the label is one of the best ways to save money when using garden fertilizer.

Slow-release granule garden fertilizers are more cost-effective than the liquid or water-soluble fertilizers. Be patient. It will take time for the plant to metabolize the fertilizer. Just as you don’t feel the effect of a vitamin immediately, it takes time to see the results. However, consistent use of fertilizers will gain you the biggest rewards.

If stores offer broken bags of fertilizer at a reduced price, then get them. There is nothing wrong with the product, although the package just might not be pretty. However, only get it if the original package has been retaped or resealed. If the store has put the fertilizer into a generic bag or paper sack that says discounted fertilizer, use extreme caution. It might not be worth it.
