If you are going to buy a drill in the market, I am sure you are going to buy a cordless drill. While searching the cordless drill you will find that some drills among them are very well in feature.

They have long battery life, extra enhanced power, and automated load identification. Those extraordinary drills have brushless motors.

What is a Brushless Drill

You will not find any metal brushes in any drill motors. The motors which run on battery power, meaning the dc motors have carbon slabs as a brush. When you remove those slabs, you will get more efficiency from the motor.

To know more about brushless motors, we need to know more about the functions of a motor. Let’s take a look at the working procedure and the difference between the brushed motor and brushless motor.

Meaning of Brushless

The traditional drill motors were made of four different parts. They are carbon brushes, magnets, armature, and the commutator. When the drilling starts, all four of the parts work together.

Brushless motors don’t use the same parts as traditional brushed motors. Brushless motors don’t contain commutators and most importantly don’t contain carbon brushes.

Removing those carbon brushes helps the motor to be more efficient. If you want to know more about that than you can go gearknows.com .

Brushed Vs Brushless

As we know earlier, the brushed motor consists of 4 different parts. The carbon brushes, magnets, armature, and commutator.

When you pull the trigger of a brushed drill, the trigger sends an electrical current from the battery to the brushes.

The brushes are loaded with spring in the commutator. They can deliver the charge from the battery to the commutator.  When the charge is passed, the commutator can deliver the charge to the device.

The armature is made of copper windings. When the charge is delivered to the armature, it magnetizes the other parts.

The armature is located just in front of the magnet which is charged opposite. When these two charges collide with each other, the motor runs and keeps running until the power is switched off.

The working procedure of a brushless motor is different. They only use magnets and armature. When you pull the trigger, the charge is delivered to the armature from the battery with the help of a circuit board.

Here the motor eliminates the use of carbon brush and commutator. In this way, the connection is established in a faster way than the carbon brushes which gives more efficiency.

Advantages of Brushless Drill Motor Technology

Let’s take a look at the advantages of a brushless motor:

Longer tool life: when you are using a brushed motor in a constant way, the commutator spins against the brushes.

In that process, sparks can fly and this is risky to work near flammable sparks. In that process, carbon brushes lose their life.

Carbon brushes can be replaced but it is cost-effective. When you use a brushless motor, you won’t have to face those problems because there are no brushes.

No risk of overheating: there is a lot of heat produced in a brushed motor because of the contact between the brush and commutator.

In a brushless motor, you don’t have to face that heating problem even when you are cutting hard material.

Long battery life: You will get longer battery life in a brushless motor because there is less friction so less power is needed to use the drill.

More compact design: Brushless motor drills are smaller in size because they don’t need any extra parts.

Because of its small and handy size, you can use them in tiny places where you cannot use the traditional drills.

Conclusion

So, brushless motors are efficient in many ways. They are handy and effective. The only downfall to brushless motors is cost.

As it is made of sensors and electronic circuits and they are a little complex. And complex things are definitely costly.

But as we all know, the more you put sugar, the sweeter it becomes. But brushless motors will save money in other ways too. So, when you buy a brushless motor drill, it’s a one-time investment for you.
