As science and technology advance, and with it humanity evolves, there is a need for some new occupations.

Most of them relate to the digital world and working over the Internet. Still, there will always be a need for different types of tradies, those who do most of their work manually or with tools.

Suppose you have a natural inclination to fix things, and you are interested in electricity. The logical sequence of events is to become an electrician. You will be pleased with the fact that these tradies are in great demand in Australia.

The number of workplaces for this profession is expected to increase in the coming years. That is especially true for highly populated areas and cities like Adelaide.

As an electrician, your job will be to fix and maintain the electrical network. It’s up to you to decide whether you want to do this in commercial or residential buildings, or a particular industrial sector.

You also have to decide on working as an independent tradesman or a team player. These resolutions will help you find the right training and get the license necessary to work in the state of South Australia.

On the source below, see the types of electricians based on their expertise:

https://www.homestratosphere.com/types-of-electricians/

The Path to Working Independently

To train as an electrician in Australia, you don’t need any prior knowledge or specific qualifications. Yet, it’s desirable to know at least the basics of electricity and some terms, so that it would be easier for you to understand the course. If you have experience in home repairs and DIY projects, this knowledge will come in handy during schooling.

You will gain a formal qualification in electrical trade school. That won’t just be mere theory. You will perform practical tasks that simulate real situations that may happen on the field.

Formal education alone is not enough for you to start working right after graduation. An apprenticeship with a sole trader or company is necessary.

There, you will apply the acquired knowledge and gain new skills. It’s a kind of supervised work, and it lasts for four years. During this time, you will have a wage (as an assistant), which is an extra motive for completing the apprenticeship.

After finishing the apprenticeship, you qualify to become a sole trader or to get a job in a company looking for electricians. Even if you entered the whole process without any prior knowledge, you’ll walk out of the electrical school as a skilled professional.

You can then apply for a license proving your expertise. That document is required in South Australia to work under the law and fair trade practice.

Sense of Mechanic

To work as an electrician, you also need some skills that you won’t learn in school. They should follow your interests in mechanics, electricity, and fixing things. If you have always been keen on DUY projects, that can be an extra kick-start for you to become a great electrician.

Those who show an inclination for mechanics won’t have a hard time during school and apprenticeship. They will enjoy acquiring knowledge in the field they are interested in, which will give results later in work.

Such tradies are dedicated to their work. They are continually expanding their knowledge and improving their skills to provide customers with a better and more efficient service. And, of course, to be better paid.

Responsibility and Commitment

Responsibility and Commitment

The job of electricians is not easy, so you shouldn’t take it for granted. They are tradesmen that deal with electricity and work with devices that conduct high or low voltage. As experts from THG Electrical explain, they must first take care of themselves and clients, and then the property.

To be safe during work, you need to be familiar with safety procedures and standards. Performing this job with the utmost caution is a must. If you have a problem that could bother you at work (colour-blindness, spine problems, history of substance abuse), maybe this career is not for you.

A good electrician is reliable and responsible. These qualities will come to the fore during the apprenticeship. By being devoted to the school and work tasks, you can get excellent grades and reputation among the ones providing you with an apprenticeship. That can open up chances for finding a full-time job after finishing schooling.

Communication Skills

Good communication skills are essential in any job that requires any work with people. Unless you are an electrician working only with large companies, you will need to talk to customers. A friendly approach that makes them feel comfortable is a must, even when dealing with demanding clients.

Keep in mind that most customers call tradies in times of crisis. If you want to be an electrician, in addition to rhetoric, you also need some psychological skills. This way, you will be able to calm and relax the clients and rest them assured that you will solve the problem they have.

Business Sense

If your choice is not to be a field operative throughout your whole work span, you must gain some business skills. Whether you are an independent sole trader or a full-time employee of a company, any new knowledge can help you in your career, and open up new opportunities. No one is born with excellent business skills, but they learn them through practice.

During operation, pay attention to some administrative tasks, such as invoicing or inventory tracking. Work on your managerial skills and try to impose yourself as a leader. All of these skills can be of great help to you once you decide to become a sole trader. See here how to start an electrician business.

Being an electrician can be quite a rewarding career. Make an effort to gain the necessary qualifications and show a willingness to learn. As in every business area, trends in the electrician business are changing. If you are upgrading your skills and gaining a good reputation, there will always be work for you.
