4 Tips for Energy-Efficient Home Year-Round

Between all the household work, the thought of a surging energy bill could easily slip out of one’s mind. The later they realize about high energy consumption, the more financial burden it’ll create.

That’s why it is recommended to follow the tips given below and be cautious about energy efficiency all year round (not just in winter).

Upgrade Your Windows

If your house is not heating well or if there is a draft in the house, it is most likely to be due to old windows (or doors). Therefore, you should consider repairing your draft windows or installing new ones. It will ensure that the room temperatures remain ideal as per the weather.

Pro Tip: When upgrading your windows look for the one having argon gas between two panes. The reason being is that they are well-insulated. Furthermore, look for glass with a low-emissivity coating. It helps restrict harmful UV rays, thus protecting your house and furniture from damage.

Install Tankless Water Heater

Everyone loves long and hot showers during winter. For many family members it is part of their self-care routine allowing them to de-stress. However, these long baths might not be ideal for your finances as they contribute immensely to energy consumption.

Fortunately, by switching to tankless water heaters, you and your family members will be able to enjoy the steamy showers. Tankless or hybrid heaters are more energy efficient and qualify for state rebate programs such as California’s rebate program. It means your monthly utility bills will reduce, while the cost of installing a new water heater will also be affordable.

Replace Your Old Light Bulbs

A well-lit house contributes to its curb appeal. However, in order for your house to look illuminated, you don’t have to compromise with your budget. A wide range of light bulbs is available in the market at different price points. However, you must look for energy-efficient light bulbs, particularly those which last longer than incandescents.

For instance, you can use CFLs. They consume less than two-thirds of energy and last as long as ten years. Not to forget, CFLs are affordable too (on average, they cost between 3 to 5 dollars each).

Enhance Appliance Efficiency

Did you know that over the past few decades, the residential electricity consumption due to appliances and home electronics has increased to 31%? It has nearly doubled, from 1.77 quadrillion Btu (quads) to 3.25 quads.

Therefore, to turn your house into energy efficient all year round, you must invest in energy star rating appliances. In addition, repair appliances as and when required. It’ll improve their efficiency and lower your utility bills.

Wrapping It All Up

Turning your home energy-efficient need not be a hassle. Instead, you need to pay attention to the day-to-day activities. For instance, switch off the lights when not required, purchase energy star ranking appliances and schedule annual maintenance. Following these simple tips will ensure you are not burning holes in your pocket while paying energy bills.
