What to Do If the Garage Door Does Not Open

If it is not possible to open the garage door, there can be various reasons. However, the first step, in this case, is to get back into the garage. In many cases, the trigger for the error in the mechanism can only be eliminated with the gate open.

The Opening Mechanism is Stuck

Often, especially with older manually operated garage doors, the opening mechanism becomes distorted. This can often be remedied quite easily from the inside by means of a new setting. If the gate is locked from the outside, an attempt to lever out the locking points can be promising. Care should be taken when doing this so as not to cause major damage.

Damaged Locking Mechanism

If the garage door can no longer be unlocked or the key has broken in the lock, the locksmith can help in many cases. If you lend a hand, you can increase the damage even further. If the lock is free, it can possibly be opened with a bent wire and a lot of skill. Alternatively, the locking lever can be turned through a hole drilled in the door leaf next to the lock.

Damage to Electrically Operated Garage Doors

In the case of garage doors with an electric drive, damage to the opening mechanism can also prevent the door from opening. Furthermore, damage to the door operator itself, the radio receiver, or the hand-held transmitter can cause the malfunction.

Defective Door Operator

If the door drive no longer works, the electric motor no longer reacts to the corresponding opening signals. This could be due to a damaged wireless circuit board. Engine damage is also possible, in which case the drive is no longer operational.

Defective Hand Transmitter

If the hand-held transmitter no longer works properly, you should first check whether the batteries are empty. If this is not the case, an interruption in the power supply to the electric drive may restore contact between the transmitter and the drive. Another option is to reset the drive according to the operating instructions.

So, The Gate Can Be Opened Again

Electrically operated garage doors usually have an emergency release. This is particularly useful if the garage cannot be entered through a side door or window. The emergency release lever inside the garage is operated with a cable, which disconnects the door from the electric drive and can be opened by hand.

Repair Damage to The Garage Door

If the cause of the garage door no longer opening is found, it should be rectified immediately. A functional test is recommended for electric drives, jamming gate mechanisms should be readjusted.
