If you were to go to your local hardware or home improvement store, the average garden fountain can range from $200 to $700, depending upon the material and quality of hardware used to build the garden fountain.

Since many homeowners do not want to invest such a large amount of money on a garden decoration, here, homeowners will learn to make one cheaply, rather than buying an expensive one from a store.

This guide is on how to build a water fountain with a flower watering can. Let’s get started with the materials and tools needed, as explained in the next section.

Materials & Tools Required

Materials

  • (1) Flower Watering Can
  • (1) A piece of Old Fence/ Wood
  • (1) Barrel or Bucket
  • (1) Fountain Water Pump Kit
  • (7) 1/2 inch Screws

Tools

  • Drill
  • Drill Bits for Screws and Drilling Holes

Building the Base of the Watering Can Fountain

The first step is to build the base of the water fountain. The materials necessary to make a garden fountain base is a barrel or a bucket and the old piece of fencing or wood. One suggestion for the type of barrel or bucket to use as the base is the aluminum garden barrels, which are used many times for bobbing apples around Halloween time.

These barrels are strong, since they are made out of metal, and are big enough to have a hanging watering pour water down into the base.

Take the piece of old fence, or wood, and line it up against the back side of the barrel or bucket. Use five screws and drill them through the top of the barrel into the piece of fence or wood you decided to use.

Make sure the screws are drilled high enough above the water line, so water does not leak out of the holes you created. Once you are finished, the piece of fence or wood should be standing straight out of the barrel or bucket, ready to have the watering can mounted to the top.

Mounting the Watering Can

In order to mount the watering can onto the piece of wood, place the handle of the watering can against the piece of wood and point the spout of the watering can on enough of an angle downward, allowing the water to fall from the watering can straight into the base of the water fountain.

Use two screws and mount the watering can onto the piece of wood by drilling the two screws through the handle of watering can an into the piece of fence or wood mounted to the barrel or bucket.

Installing the Electric Water Pump

Next, it’s time to install the electric water pump kit. A water pump kit can be purchased at many general retail stores, such as Amazon, Walmart or Kmart, along with almost every hardware or home improvement store.

They are usually located in the landscaping department or lawn and garden department, depending on the store you visit and can cost anywhere from $10 to $100, depending on the brand and size of water fountain pump purchased.

Garden Fountain Water Pump

To install the water fountain pump system onto the watering fountain, you simply have to place the pump at the bottom of the barrel or bucket you used and mount the clear tube up the back side of the piece of fence or wood used to hold the watering can.

Drill a hole through the piece of wood and then into the top side of the watering can, making sure it is far enough toward the back to prevent the tube from being visible. Make sure the holes you drill are large enough for the clear tube to easily slide through them. Run the clear tubing through the hole in the piece of fence or wood and into the hole drilled into the bucket.

After the water pump is installed, the process to make a garden fountain is complete and you can place the fountain into your garden, fill the base of the garden fountain with water, and plug the water pump into the nearest outlet to bring the flower watering can garden fountain decoration to life.

Preventing the Fountain from Falling

You may find the watering can fountain to be top-heavy, resulting in the fountain always wanting to fall one way or the other. There are two ways to prevent a garden fountain from falling.

The first way is to dig a hole for the base of the garden fountain to sit in, so the base of the garden fountain will be level with the ground and basically mounting it to the ground. If you don’t want to go through all that work, simply throw a few left-over garden edging bricks or rocks into the base of the fountain and this should help prevent it from falling.
