You’ve done the savvy thing and started working from home, utilizing a virtual office and business address, and settling comfortably into remote life. Now, it is time to enhance your working space with some greenery.
Plants are the perfect home office companion. They clean the air, bring a splash of color to the space, and give you a hint of nature in your peripheral vision, which is known to be good for your mental health. However, not all potted plants are made equal, and realistically, some green pals are more suited to your office than others.
The last thing you want is to see your plants slowly die. To avoid that depressing fate, stick to any of the indoor-friendly varieties below:
The string of hearts, a string of turtles, a string of pearls, and similar crevice plants sit on any shelf and cascade down, offering a lot of visual impact without taking up much room. They are brilliant home office plants because they only need a big water every now and again, so they thrive on what other plants would consider neglect.
These shelf danglers will also ‘let you know’ when they need some attention by going a little wrinkly. Even better, they can be easily propagated, so you can make your own plant bushier or take cuttings to give to friends or spread throughout your home.
A sculptural corner plant will sit in a bigger pot designed to fill a large gap in a home office. Popular varieties include euphorbia and candelabra euphorbia, which give the office an eye-catching feature perfect for a sunny corner.
For more leaves and a softer impact, something like a monstera deliciosa is a great sculptural corner plant because it can be held on a moss pole and tends to be quite fast-growing. If your office is quite shady, it will be the perfect environment for a monstera deliciosa. They are jungle plants and tend to sit under the shade of larger shrubs and trees, so they do well in spaces with less light.
For desks with lots of bright light or perhaps a corner with direct sunshine, little spiky pals are perfect. Cactuses and succulents love neglect and do not need watering very often at all. Bunny ears cacti are very cute, but beware – a brush against their bristles will be painful! Otherwise, aloe vera, blue torch cactus, and pretty much any other miniature cactus you can find in your local garden center will work just fine on your desk and look very cute in a bright, beautiful pot.
Vining plants like pothos, monstera adansonii, monstera Peru, and ivy tend to be non-demanding when it comes to their care. You can have them growing up a moss pole or dangling down, but for full leafy wonder, it is a great idea to allow the plants to climb the walls.
